I have a character I've developed that I'm working on making a sheet for for a potential future campaign. They're a half-elf reborn (as the title gives away), and I'd much prefer to keep the darkvision and fey ancestry from them being a half-elf by birth than get 2 new proficiencies as the character builder only allows. I've seen other people coming across similar issues of wanting to keep features for the lineages that have just suggested manually giving certain proficiencies and swimming or flying speeds as per the original races traits. I was able to do that easy enough with the darkvision, but as far as I can tell I can't see a way to do it to manually edit the saving throws for the fey ancestry trait. Is there any easy work around for this? Or would it just be easier in the long run to just talk to my DM and remember it whenever it may come up? Thanks in advance! :)
I'd suggest having a look in the Homebrew forum as that's what you'll need to do. Also you might want to start with asking your DM if he'll allow it at all (since the rules doesn't).
The thing is, if you’re a reborn, then that is your race. Picking up abilities from your “original” race, and then tacking more onto it via being reborn is effectively giving two races worth of benefits. You wouldn’t say, I’m a dwarf, but I also want halfling’s luck. While you’re example is at least grounded in a good reason, the end result, in terms of game mechanics, would be the same and lead to an op character.
So, first, yes, talk to your DM and see if they are ok with it. Second, you could try and get at through role play. Just be a half-elf, and follow all the half-elf rules, but say you’re kinda undead but not really. It gives you the flavor of the reborn without doubling up on a race.
The way reborn works in lore, and in the abilities, states that a reborn would/should keep the physical traits of a race if you become one. Yet, all they retain are race skills, and any climbing/swimming/flying speed the origin race may of had. These are confusing mixed messages.
This still confuses me because by my interpretation if you were a reborn kenku you would either be entirely mute (due to being unable to speak yourself and losing the mimicry ability) OR just get your voice back... so how does reborn work??
