Hello. I've been looking at my character sheet here on DnD Beyond, and comparing it to other character sheets I've used on different platforms (Roll20 and IRL) and I'm noticing an interesting, and quite frankly frustrating disparity.
In DnD Beyond, at Level 5 for a Dex Fighter, my Longbow is listed as having a Hit/DC of +9, with a proficiency bonus of +3 and a Dex Modifier of +4. 4 + 3 =/= 9, so where the heck is the other +2 coming from? This applies to all of my ranged weapons, but none of my Finesse weapons.
Additionally, the damage computation is coming out to 1d8+8, and again, with a Dex Modifier of +4 =/= +8, so where is the additional +4 coming from? This is only being applied to my longbow, and not the Homebrew Heavy Crossbow I also have equipped.
Is there a setting I'm missing, some check in the box that I made on accident that would skew these numbers so drastically? Thanks!
Holy carp I'm an idiot. I now see the error of my ways. *facepalm* Thank you, kind stranger.
My issue was that my other characters were utilizing a fighting style not listed in DnD Beyond, so when it came to that point in the character creation stage, that literally became a dump/placeholder and I forgot about it.
That still leaves the question of why the damage is doubled though.
That extra +4 damage is specific to your longbow -- it's not showing up on your rapier or composite bow -- so check the Customize section on the item itself to see if anything's in there?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
I notice that your character has a homebrewed “Composite Greatbow.” It is described as a type of longbow, but is based off of a crossbow. It is possible that hat when that homebrew was created that some modifier related to longbow damage was added to it since the description talks about adding Strength to the damage roll. It could be that the wrong modifier(s) got attached to that during its creation.

I thought that too but didn’t see an asterisk next to it. But maybe that doesn’t show for us from the link and only visible to the OP

If that crossbow has the modifier(s) baked in it won’t display any asterisks. Like, if you’re wearing a bracers of archery.
I think you're right, as soon as I removed the homebrewed weapon, the Longbow reverted to the correct damage calculation. I'll have to go in an fiddle with the Homebrew stuff then, to figure out what it needs to jive properly.
Happy to help. If you can share a screencap of the modifiers I can tell you which one is your culprit. (Probably Modifier: Damage->Subtype: Longbows)
It was, as soon as I removed it from the Crossbow, it no longer caused any issues with the currently equipped Longbow. It clicked that because this is a "magic" item as built, it was applying global modifiers to the character, so whichever "global" modifier I'd assigned to the weapon, assigned it to all like items. Hence, I was boosting the Longbow, and not the Homebrewed Crossbow.

What that modifier will do is add 1d10+5 to the 1d10+Dex mod damage that the crossbow already does. If all you want it to do is add the Str modifier to the damage roll then I would recommend this modifier instead:

Did you take the archery fighting style? Maybe link your sheet so we can look at it and figure it out

The only option selected in the Customize section is "Display As Attack".

I notice they’re also running a homebrewed race, and that could also be the culprit.
