Hi all. I was wondering if any of you have seen examples of 5e monsters with abilities that recharge contingent on a predetermined condition, rather than based on a roll (eg. recharge 5-6) or time (eg. recharges after a short or long rest). I have in mind the mechanics of 4e, where certain monsters would recharge their abilities when bloodied (half health). So far I don't see anything like that.
I can't recall any official monsters using such recharge mechanics. Remember that being bloodied is no longer a mechanic in the game so that is out the window. The only thing that comes to mind is a "deathrattle" sort of mechanic, where the monster uses a special ability upon death but that's not really a recharge.
I guess this is because such mechanics tend to complicate (and thus prolong) the combat rules and they've trimmed it for simplicity and ease of use.
That said, if used once in a while I think it could be pretty cool. Maybe a golem that has a special attack that recharges whenever he's hit by an attack that deals lightning damage or something like that.

Froghemoths have the exact opposite, hehe. (Always found it curious that they're resistant to lightning damage, but also slowed by it.)
Both of these are very close to what I had in mind. My current project is a monster that has an attack which recharges early when it devours (swallows and kills) another creature. Thanks for your help!

Would you consider the clay golem's berserk feature to fall into the situation you are describing?
