Hi, I am rather new to D&D so please forgive me if this is a dumb question! I am having trouble understanding how multiclass spellcasting works. I am playing a 4th level Arcane Trickster who is going to multiclass as a 1st level Wizard and I don't quiet understand how my spell slots are supposed to work now. Some help would be very appreciated! :)
Your spells known would be based on the individual class.
Arcane Trickster would know 3 cantrips and 4 spells (1st level). This will increase per the table found in the Arcane Trickster information.
Wizard would know 3 cantrips and six 1st level spells. This will increase as you find spells to transcribe into your spell book.
Your spell slots are a combination of Arcane Trickster levels and Wizard levels combined. As Arcane Trickster is in the lowest tier of casters you would earn 1/3rd of your level as spell slots but you would gain the full spell slots of your Wizard levels as they are a full caster.
Arcane Trickster 4 would be considered a "level 1" caster and your Wizard would be considered a "level 1" caster. This would mean you would get the spell slots available for a Level 2 caster on the table found on page 165 of the PHB. This would be 3 first level spell slots.
Full casters (clerics, druids, wizards, bards, and sorcerers) gain a level as a spellcaster every time they gain a level. Paladins and Rangers gain a spellcaster level every other Paladin or Ranger level, and are thus called half casters. Eldritch Knights and Arcane Tricksters gain a spellcaster level every 3 fighter or rogue levels and are called third casters. Warlocks are their own thing for spellcaster level purposes and their spell slots are considered separately. Spellcaster level is thus full caster level + (half caster level/2 rounded down) + (third caster level/3 rounded down). You get the spell slots available to that level spellcaster (see the chart on page 165 of the Player"s Handbook). You are or will be Rogue 4 (arcane trickster)/wizard 1. This means 1 (wizard) + 0 (ranger and paladin)/2 + 4 (rogue)/3==>1+0+4/3==>1+1= 2==> a second level caster and you'll have 3 1st level spell slots.
Keep in mind that this has limited bearing on what spells you can take/prepare as that is determined by your class that you are gaining. For example, a bard 1, sorcerer 1, wizard 1 would be a third level caster granting 2 2nd level spell slots, but none of the classes are high enough level to select a 2nd level spell (though their 1st level spells could be upcast when applicable). See page 164 of the PHB under spell slots for more details.
Also, keep in mind that you have to prepare wizard spells from your spellbook to cast, of a number equal to your intelligence modifier plus your wizard level pg 114. You'll be able to cast those prepared spells in addition to your arcane trickster spells with your spell slots.

If I'm reading this correctly:

Oh, okay. For some reason I thought I'd just get 2 first level spell slots, but I think I understand now.Thank you for clearing that up for me!

Thank you very much for the info! That certainly makes it easier to understand.
