I'm doing some homebrew and one of the big players in the game world is a revenant. However, he has a few different rules about him. I'm trying to see if his lore is palatable with the Forgotten Realms setting.
Could a revenant have secondary motivations in addition to revenge?
He died in a demiplane of dread, which means when he didn't find his soul going to the afterlife as it should, he had an epiphany about the dark nature of the land. Convinced he had to spare his party the same fate, he came back, and designed to punish the originator of the demiplanes as his goal of vengeance. His greatest desire is to crack open the demiplane of dread and let captured souls be free, an impossible task, but one he's emotionally committed to.
Could a revenant keep the alignment they had in life?
This character was a vengeance paladin and devotee of Helm. He was chaotic good, caring nothing for nobles who exploit the law and only tolerating a legal system that was fair and kind to those in its thrall. These values were written into his very soul. Most revenants are true neutral according to the monster stat block, but I was wondering if one could keep the values they held in life?
Could a revenant keep their paladin abilities?
Helm has no tenets concerning undeath, in fact his core principle is to never abandon one's post. I imagine a creature who maintained their oath no matter the situation would be able to cling to the paladin abilities they once had?
Can a revenant be ressurected?
Once a revenant has finished their goal, they are gone for good to their new afterlife. However... What if you got to one before that point? Say you manage to get a revenant to listen to you and compel it to see reason, making the soul both available and willing to be resurrected. I thought of this as a potential plot resolution for this character, but want to be sure if it's lore friendly.
I guess it is technically possible to seek revenge against the originator of the demiplane, if he knew who it was in life. Sparing his party the same fate would be a fortuitous consequence of his main goal and nothing else.
Revenants are neutral because the nature of their existence is selfish. They want revenge, not to help others.
I don't see why a revenant couldn't keep the class features it had in life.
True resurrection will bring it back, anything less is DM discretion.
DMs can change the rules to suit their narrative, but these are the answers according to the printed setting.
That all works for me. Considering he was a vengeance paladin in life, wanting nothing beyond revenge would fit. And since he wants to destroy the Dark Ones, an inherently impossible task... He'd be spinning his wheels for a very, very long time.

Well, a year. Revenants pass on if they can't complete their revenge in a year.
That I didn't actually know. The revenants in Barovia have been active for a very long time, haven't they? I thought the Demiplane of Dread changed things up.

I'm not sure. I only read the revenant description, I haven't read barovia lore. It's possible, and again, DM can change rules to fit narrative.
