Why can a small sized creature carry the same as a medium one? (Looking at you halfling)
If I have a halfling with 15 strength I can carry 225 lbs (15*15), same as any medium creature according to the RAW. The carrying capacity doesn't go down until you become a tiny creature.
How in the world can a 40 some pound halfling carry 5 times it's own weight?
I believe this is matter of balancing the different races. Too many disadvantages for being small sized might seem unfair.
But if you like to put some physic into the topic:
Small animals (or creatures in general) have a ratio strength/mass higher than big animals. An ant can carry 100 times its body mass, an elephant can carry around 2 times its weight.
I obviously do not want to justify the D&D mechanics with the physic. Just food for thoughts.

I do like to imagine that a halfling has an secret magic exoskeleton.
D&D isn't about realism. It's about fun. 5e ramped up that thought process, and continues to do so, and tries not to penalize one for picking a small race, or a gender, or anything really. Logic is ok, to an extent in D&D, but if you apply it too much the game loses the core concept of "We're all playing to have fun"

Remember there are Rules as Written (RAW), Rules as Intended (RAI), and Rules as Fun (RAF). There's some great RAW, RAI, and RAF here... please check in with your DM to determine how they want to adjudicate the RAW/RAI/RAF for your game.
I agree with lilszamora, im making a kobold with the same strength stat and 225 POUNDS seems like alot. Ants are able to carry things because A. different kinds of muscles and B. their body is lightweight enabling them to carry less of their own weight such as humans who carry around 150+ pounds of their own weight. Also sometimes it being somewhat logical is what makes it fun. I think its just ridiculous for me, a 2.25 foot KOBOLD to be able to PICK UP THE BBEG. considering its a humanoid and not a dragon :/ (also this character is a rogue)

It's so that they don't need to create duplicates of tons of adventuring equipment where the weight & cost of that equipment would obviously also change based on the size of the creature. For instance plate armour for a halfling be less expensive and weigh less than plate armour for a goliath, a tent for a halfling would likewise be smaller & lighter than one for a goliath, halflings would require fewer rations, their shields and weapons would be smaller, smaller amounts of potions would be required to achieve the same effect etc... etc..... But rather than have a huge pile of rules for how the cost/weight of various items change for different sized PCs they just made all PCs either Medium or Small and give them equal carry weight.

Probably endoskeleton. But I support that theory.
Grasshopper strength? Ant willpower? :)
Old enough to be a Grognard,
Young at heart enough to enjoy 5e

and keep in mind kobolds weight 25-35

I sort of miss racial stat modifications for exactly this reason.
How could a halfling be just as strong as an Orc?
I do not see a lot of 4 foot guys competing in power lifting.
Huh, have you watched olympic weight lifting? Those guys rarely clear 5ft.
But as @Agilemind said, it is just a simplification to make the game playable for all races.
