Is there a spell that protects against stealth or Rogue sneak attack or anything like it? I know of the spell that helps someone see invisible creatures but anything else? Thanks!
There's two ways to beat stealth: get better at perception, or make them worse at stealth. For the former, there's Guidance, Hunter's Mark, and Enhance Ability. Bardic Inspiration is also useful, though it's not a spell. For the latter, there's Hex (recommended) and Ray of Sickness (lasts for one round). Note that they have to beat EVERY enemy's passive Perception, so anyone able to cast these spells contributes.
The best way to beat Sneak Attack is to cast Invisibility, Fog Cloud or Darkness and hide. Being unseen prevents them from getting advantage, and hiding prevents them from placing an ally next to you. If you do get found, being unseen will let you move away without provoking an opportunity attack, leaving your action free for another hiding attempt. Sleet Storm and Hunger of Hadar might also suit your needs, depending on the circumstances.
Giving them Disadvantage on attacks will also do the trick. Restraining them with Ensnaring Strike, Entangle, Web or Evard's Black Tentacles are great options. Frightening them with Wrathful Smite is also an option, though that spell is limited to paladins. Grease can work if someone grapples them to keep them from standing back up. Ray of Sickness, Vicious Mockery or Frostbite will work for one round or attack.
Alarm can help you avoid an ambush while taking a rest.
A low level spell I would use is Faerie Fire. The spell works automatically only with the invisible not unseen targets in general, but since the target sheds dim light, the DM could impose disadvantage on Stealth.

I was thinking along the lines of a a Rogue using it's bonus action to stealth and then acquire a sneak attack. Looking at your advice, is it a contest? In other words if I use enhance ability to give a perception boost, does the rogue have to beat the passive perception which is not rolled? How does that work? I might not understand how that works. Think of a PC vs PC battle between a Rogue and an ally vs a Cleric and an ally. The faerie fire seems good but a good Rogue most likely will have a high Dex and be able to beat the saving throw. Either way thank you for the ideas. I love these forums. The help aspect is amazing. I look forward to other ideas...

When the Rogue rolls his or her Stealth check, usually it is against the target's passive Perception as a DC. Advantage on WIS checks adds 5 to passive Perception.
A contest occurs when someone actively searches for the Rogue, in which case the Rogue is revealed if the active Perception check beats the original Stealth check.
I originally, wrote this post in response to a character of mine being a Dragonborn with Alert feat. I think I ultimately wrote a different post asking about how it worked versus a Rogue Stealth, sneak attack. Since Alert specifically states you can not be surprised while conscious and other creatures do not gain advantage on attack rolls as a result of being unseen by you. It is very logical in my opinion as it would be easy to explain that an alert character has an uncanny sense of smell. Perfect sense for a Dragonborn. As far as I am concerned, Alert should be the perfect defense against a rogue sneak attack ability...
That's a really good point. My character has Alert too, which I mainly took for the bonus to initiative, but Alert negates the need for blur as you're removing the advantage - which is pre-requisite for a sneak attack. Thank you clear_seeker, you've saved me one round of casting!!!
My only other challenge now is to try to "mark" the rogue so I can avoid him going into stealth in order to target him. Faerie Fire is about the only appropriate spell I can find, but it misses on a Dex save - which is the rogues best save (same issue for a bag of flour, which seems to be a reddit favourite :-)).

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
Exactly the answer I wanted thank you! I was pretty sure I read about hiding but missed the details.
Wouldn't blur also work as it imposes disadvantage on any attack rolls against you and a Rogue's sneak attack needs advantage to work?
