I'm thinking of multi-classing my Eldritch Knight Fighter into Paladin. Kind of redundant, but we only have one healer and with how everyone else is playing their character i'm falling into a back line archer/support caster type position. Having access to some healing magic I feel would help the party a bit. Lay on hands would give me straight healing just to revive someone should they go down in order to prevent the death if I don't have a character while also giving me some spell slots that I can switch out. This is where things get interesting though.
At 5th lvl my EK will have 3 spell slots. When I hit lvl 2 in Paladin it says I will have 2 spell slots... So when I'm EK 5/P 2 will I have 5 spell slots???
Once you start multiclassing, you use the multiclassing spellcasting rules. For EK, you get 1/3 your level (rounded down), so 1. For paladin, you get 1/2 your level (rounded down), so 1. Effectively you become a 2nd level multiclass caster with access to 3 first level slots.
So the plan is to take EK up to lvl 5 before I start multi-classing. That would give me 3 spell slots. Then when I start multi-classing into Paladin and hit lvl 2 in that, instead of getting 2 additional spell slots for a total of 5 I will get 1 additional spell slot for a total of 4?
So when I reach EK 5/Pal 2 I will have a total 4 spell slots?
Or when I reach EK 5/Pal 2 I will only have 3 spell slots?
All the spell slots that I can get for these two classes ends up being first level so i'm not including that in the calculation as its all I get.
The slots granted from each class don't get added to gather. The class levels (or fractions of them) get added together and that level is used to determine the slots you get. You completely ignore what slots that class was supposed to have (except to determine what spells you can know/prepare).
In this case it is 1/3rd eldritch knight level plus 1/2 paladin level. As an EK 5/paladin 2, you will have 2 spellcasting levels giving you 3 level 1 slots. At EK 6, you would get another spellcasting level, giving you 4 level 1 slots and 2 level 2 slots. Though you will still only know level 1 spells (since neither class normally has level 2 slots at those levels), you can use those level 2 spells to cast your level 1 spells at a higher level.

How does that work?

Use the chart.
EK5/3 round down = 1
Pal2/2 round down = 1
So as a 2nd level caster you have 3 1st level spell slots.
The slots granted from each class don't get added to gather. The class levels (or fractions of them) get added together and that level is used to determine the slots you get. You completely ignore what slots that class was supposed to have (except to determine what spells you can know/prepare).
