I don’t own any books or the likes and haven’t bought anything. I made a character who is a variant aasimar, but I’m not sure what the character creator is calling a variant. I’ve only heard of protector, guardian, and fallen aasimar. Which subrace is it?
The free characters on DnDBeyond include races from the Player's Handbook and Elemental Evil Player's Companion and the example Variant races from the Dungeonmaster's Guide. You do not need to own those sources to create characters with them. (Further information from those sources to use with DDB features will require owning those sources on DDB and there is a lot of information in the PHB alone.)
The free Aasimar from DMG is a Variant example race based on Human and differs from the non-Variant Aasimar race from Volo's Guide to Monsters. The VGtM's non-Variant Aasimar race requires ownership of that source to use in DDB's Character Builder.

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.

Couple of corrections:
The races from the PHB are not free (namely Drow and forest gnome). The free races are from basic rules, SRD, EEPC, and DMG.
The variant aasimar is actually based on tieflings as a celestial opposite to them. Darkvision, damage resistance, and innate spells are all taken from tiefling.

I think it’s the one in the Dungeon Master’s Guide used as an example to demonstrate creating a new race.
It is an example from the DMG.
