My Game Master has just given me a magic pair of pants, giving me +5 movement speed and the ability to cast Expeditious Retreat once per long rest (day? I'm not quite sure.) I want to add the spell to my spell list, much how racial spells or Eldritch Evocations are added to the list. How do I do this?
You got to the homebrewer and create a “Wondrous Item” from scratch.
Enter the name and set it as an Uncommon Item, put anything in the description and create the item. Under “Additional Information” check off “Has Charges,” list “Number of Charges” as 1 and put the “Reset Condition” as Dawn.
Then “Add Modifier” add the modifier to increase your speed:
Then enter the following into the “Description” under “Basic Information”
While you are wearing these magic pants, your walking speed increases by 5 feet.
In addition, these magic pants come with one charge. As an action you can spend the charge to cast [spell]Expeditious Retreat[/*_*spell] targeting yourself. These magic pants regain their charge each day at dawn.
(Delete the *_* and it will create the tooltip like this Expeditious Retreat)
Then, you must re-save the whole magic item using the main “SAVE CHANGES” button.
My best recommendation is to go to the Actions tab in your character sheet. Select Manage Custom and add the Spell action. Name it something that fits the item or scenario you are in and list the description of the action as casting X spell.
Hi! Kinda late to the party. I saw your post and found it really helpful! I created a Homebrew spell that I would like to add to a homebrew weapon, however it doesn't seem to work that way ...
My HB spell is called "Dansleif's Light" and I entered it like that: [spell]Dansleif's Light[/*_*spell) ... when i load up the weapon, instead of the spell popup it says "Tooltip not found". What could be wrong here or does it simply not work with HB spells? My spell isn't posted to the community.
Duplicate a magic initiate feat in homebrew, add the new feat to your character sheet, THEN use the 'choose the spell' option to select "Danself's light". Had a similar problem when re-creating one of the legacy Tieflings, haven't tried it with homebrew spells but it's worth a shot

I hope that helps.

You can’t tooltip homebrews like that. It used to be possible to create false tooltips for homebrews, but that stopped working as I understand. If you want to try it you can find the instructions in the General Homebrew FAQ , question #9: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq#GeneralHomebrewFAQ&BasicTroubleshooting), but like I said it hasn’t been working lately.

Bit of a long way around but try this....
