Sooo what would be the damage for biting from any humanoid besides the ones that actually have a bite attack. Like say a human bites someone is it like a D4 + strength mod? Or is it unarmed strike?
Well, typically an unarmed strike does 1 + strength mod. But... let's face it, humans really do not have strong jaw muscles. I mean, we can climb mountains, we can run forever, we can survive limb loss, we're pretty f-cking cool, but Bite Force is really not something we're known for. Heck, we use silverware and we tenderize meat before cooking the heck out of it until it falls off the bone.
Personally, I would say that the more standard (i.e. "civilized") races would do just 1 hp of piercing damage with a bite. No strength mod. Maybe some of the more rugged races (half-orc, dragonborn, orc, bugbear, tortle, leonin, minotaur, heck maybe even the goblin) would do 1 hp + their strength mod. The lizardfolk actually already have a bite attack listed as a racial characteristic, which does a whopping 1d6 + their strength mod. But that is the absolute top limit, and is unique to them.
I mean, if we look at this from the perspective of our world (which, yes, I know, it's a fantasy game, it's not real, relax, I know, I'm just saying...) we are basically Level-0 humans with maybe 5 or 6 hp each. How many times do you think you would have to bite someone to kill them?
Okay. Wow. Seeing that written out like that is kinda creepy. Honestly. Taken out of context that is a really terrible question to ask. It's like if Dexter saw that old Tootsie Roll Pop commercial too many times. ("A one... a two.... *crunch*... a three.") Please don't try to answer that question. It's not a test, or a challenge. It's just hypothetical. So, yeah, one hit point per bite would be my call. And no prof bonus on the attack either. And if you roll a Nat 1 on your attack you chip a tooth and have to go to the D&Dentist to get it fixed.

Well, again, no amount of training can overcome the limitations of basic biology. I mean, a well trained human can jump dang far - but you can't fly. A well trained human can hold their breath for many minutes of swimming - but you can't breath underwater.
So I'd say the damage limits stand unless that monk is a lizardfolk monk - or some other equivalent race that has a bite attack as a racial characteristic.
Or maybe... if the monk was played by Jaws from Moonraker... or maybe Gary Busey.

RAW, a bite is just an unarmed strike even if you don't possess a Bite attack like Lizardfolk do. so, 1+Str mod. that's it.

Human children can do as much damage with a bite as a small animal (one that would do 1d4+STR or 1d4 even if STR is negative). I think 1+STR is perfectly reasonable. The animals that are evolved with strong jaws do more damage than that in d&d, so it fits just fine.
That's why I love D&D. It lets us live out such exotic fantasies as... getting 8 hours of sleep every night... going on adventures... killing people who get in our way... having enough gold to buy our own castle.... etc etc...

Humans actually have quite strong jaw muscles compared to many other animals, including certain types of doggos, apes and sharks. Our main problem is lack of sharp teeth but the force itself is not weak. The reason we cook our meals has more to do with us being bad at digesting certain types of food. 1+Str mod is quite reasonable.
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
So if we go with the 1+str mod, what would a goblin do? Their str mod is -1. So they do no damage on a bite? Or is it a min of 1 point of damage? Same thing with a kobold, they have a -2 str mod.
Looking at basic creatures that have bite attacks the damage has a wide range. Some do 1 point of damage, Some have 1d4 +/- 1, and some even stronger.
I don't think humans would have anything more than 1 damage, but I think giving a goblin (with all those jagged teeth) a 1d4 or 1d4 -1 is reasonable.

This, both of these. As far as Rules as written is concerned.

Yeah, we actually have really damn powerful jaws. Physically, biting is our most damaging feature due to the applied pressure (force / surface area).
1+STR Unarmed Strike, 1d4+STR with Tavern Brawler, Martial Arts damage for Monks.
