I am suffuse with ideas for homebrewed Wildspace adventures but I couldn't wait for Tuesday. So, in the mean time, I put together an eclectic crew to throw at the Spelljammer Academy free adventure. There's a minotaur fighter who hates tribbles miniature space hamsters, a shaggy yodeling hobgoblin arcana cleric co-pilot, a former City Watch Investigator giff artificer turned jazzy bounty hunter with a bum arm, aaand then there's the rules-non-following lizardfolk man destined to be captain and then brag about it to green women. My first thought was a tavern brawling, Gorn grappling, silver tongued swashbuckler. However, it appears that SpellJammer helms will respond only to spell slots. Do you even get to be a captain if you cannot at all steer the ship? Arcane Trickster won't be enough if spell slot level determines speed. Then, why not lean into the "face" as a bard? Sounds reasonable. However, the first combat fell really flat the moment Tiberius pulled out a lyre instead of throwing a punch. Just doesn't feel right. Or have I just been watching too many of the newer movies (and it'll fall into place later)? What's a slippery lizard man to do? What class would James T Kirk, if we take him seriously, be after five levels of Spelljammer Academy?
For clarification, I'm not asking what class William Shatner or Zapp Brannigan would be. Although I am curious. Very curious. But, some problems are more immediate than others.
Thanks!

None of the above -- Horizon Walker ranger. I mean, it's right there in the description
Horizon Walkers guard the world against threats that originate from other planes or that seek to ravage the mortal realm with otherworldly magic. They seek out planar portals new life and new civilizations, and keep watch over them, venturing boldly going to the Inner Planes and the Outer Planes as needed to pursue their foes.

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
i really like the ideas behind both kirk and spock. although, for my purposes i'm loathe to halt at second-level spell slots. not that it matters in the end since it turns out archanist Chewie is my co-pilot.

ah, i should have included that. my weak excuse is that my mind ricocheted off potential overlap with an adjacent adventuring party which already had a horizon walker: a Galaxy Quest-esque character named Weaver who was felt to have had a spiritual connection to hunting aberrations (with a flame thrower?).

Race: Human - Just how I see it. Humans need to be used as well.
Class: Warlock - It fits for me in trouble shooting, command, and highly functioning in space. Nothing to do with driving.
Subclass and Ability: Celestial/Pact of the tome - He made a deal with a celestial power to gain his advantage. However, his book of ancient secrets helps him to troubleshoot situations and help backup his crew while being a skilled tactician.
Best stat: Cha then Int then Con - Leadership/Lover/Tactician/Tough
Alignment: Neutral Good - His intentions are for the good of the people around him. He rebels against authority too much for Lawful, however he only uses chaos in his strategies.
I feel that his swashbuckling/fighter role was such a small part of his role you can take 1 or 2 levels in either to flesh him out, but I care more about his overall story and arc.

interesting. so, how would the patron play into his story? is it the ship's "computer" needing a subtle mouthpiece for it's agenda? or has he "cheated" his way to this position with help in the shadows which only he knows about? or maybe its a more fey trickster, throwing tests his way even as it provides him the strength to reach for the stars? I'm curious!

My first thought was lazy but was a Generic higher power, someone he would have made a pact with for something at first selfish, but it was granted because the ends could be seen and his heart could be measured.
Maybe he made a pact with one of the god's/demigods of law and order. And they have a love hate relationship because he doesn't appreciate authority but because of his nature he is still bound to it. That would be the Starfleet love/hate relationship from the original work. Or maybe with Kirk's past love for thrill seeking he got into dire trouble that almost killed him, and that pact saved his life but he must serve Lawfullness, but his rebelious nature keeps him from going past neutral, but he is a means to an end. Just spit balling....
Personally I love your ideas, and can't wait to see what you come up with. I appreciate great story telling and consider that the best part of the game!
Edit: BTW! If you ever get a chance I would suggest reading The Cloak Master Cycle series. I remember reading those back in the 90's and it was a great story. The authors really had some interesting ideas about the grand mysteries of space and had some early homebrew ideas for helms.
I need some help making this puzzle piece fit.

I'm thinking the Bard. The man made a lot of inspiring speeches after all!
ugh, 42.9% of you need your alignment checked.
i can't imagine a table receptive to this even down in old soho where they drink champagne that tastes just like cherry cola.

There is a nice little vid on youtube (albeit 18 min long) about Kirk and Spock in d&d, link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3CGzV0A15Y
Spoiler if your too lazy to watch it for what they come out as:
Kirk: Variant Human, Sailor background, Mastermind rogue 12/ Battlemaster fighter 8
Spock: Half Elf, Sage background, Enchantment Wizard 4 / Samurai Fighter 16

A Spelljammer Captain of course!
With Rogue Swashbuckler intentions.
Bard, because he was "boldly going" with every attractive alien he came across.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
James Tiberius Kirk in my eyes.

I am not sure what my Spirit Animal is. But whatever that thing is, I am pretty sure it has rabies!
