Hello all. I am a several years under my belt DnD player. I'm not saying seasoned because of my simple brain doesn't always remember the rules or anything outside of the basics of the game and the little 1-2 paragraph fluffs that they give you on the races. I like fluff. I don't know how many people do, but I read the fluff and if I like it, I don't go much further. My GM and his partner are very good at assisting me through it all and tolerating my unableness to grasp the more complex of the rules and lore. Tho there is the "huh" rule and they stick to that hard. That said... I recently started reading and learning about DnD lore and OMG you guys. The things I am learning. Like I learned until super super recently apparently dragonborn didn't have tails. The fey world has a feydark. There are elementals who are on par with the gods! I'm still learning a lot. So much interesting things. Am I the only one? My poor little view of DnD has been cracked open and it is wonderful!
All I can say is wait until you encounter the lore of worlds that are not published by WotC or are from older editions.
The "fluff" is called Lore or Color.
One of the jobs of a DM when they create their own worlds is to provide all that fluff -- and existing games usually add to it in their own way if they use a published world.
