From what i understand from current edditions and this edditon, is that tieflings dont have to look like your classic devil: red skin, red eyes, blah blah
So...is it legal to customise my tiefling to look kinda like a satyr? Cloven hooved and hair lower half upper body white skinned humanoid with ram horns... i assume so.
The description in PHB says Human in appearance with specific Fiendish Heritage stigmata: Solid-color eyes of 5 colors; a pair long horns of any kind - gazelle, ram, bovine, etc.; canine-like fangs; long tail; and the skin can be Human tones graduating to red or black tones. The legs are normal Human legs.
I was told that Feral Tieflings can have hooves, but I do not have that sourcebook. Another sourcebook has Satyrs as playable. Theros I think? Not sure.
EDIT: That stated, "Ideas, not rules". This is your life. The Xanathar said so in XGtE. Discuss with the DM. Just remember there is a Satyr race out there already. The upcoming sourcebook might make it so a Satyr can have Tiefling stats.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
Yes you can. Check the variant tiefling rules in the SCAG. There’s a table of features including cloven hooves and horns.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

What do you mean legal? I know some people will get very upset if it isn't explicitly spelled out in a rule book, but who cares? If you want your tiefling to look like a satyr go for it! Its just flavor for your game. If you want to start messing with the racial bonuses, then I would have a talk with the DM about that. The descriptions are meant to provide inspiration for PCs to help form their characters, theres no right or wrong way to envision your character so long as it doesn't impact the game mechanically.
In most games, a DM should be willing to let your character look however you want it to (within reason - no DM who values her game will let your gnome look like a miniature owlbear). Make your tiefling look more like an edgy satyr than a traditional tiefling? Sure. Tiffles have hooves as often as feet in more classic depictions, the origin of Devilish Hooves is depictions of Lucifer as half-goat. Pale skin? See the tiffle in my avatar. Ram horns? De rigeur for the species. I would see no issue, as a DM with that customization. As a player and an ardent lover of tiffles and sleek monster ladies, there are no words deep enough to express my sheer, unfiltered outrage for anyone who strips the tail off their tiffle...but fortunately you don't have to care about that, so goatman it up.
What everyone's said, cosmetics don't break the game. You may want to check with your DM to make sure you're Teifling's "look" may jibes with their world, and even then you may be able to negotiate a compromise. Tieflings have some physical trait that suggests some sort of contact between your family and the infernal (doesn't have to be breeding, in fact most lore I've read suggests Tieflings pop up as a consequence of "dealings" maybe generations back). Some worlds have some stock traits, but there's no reason yours should. I think the only point you'd have to negotiate would be how concealable the trait is. In the rules its suggested Tieflings are easily recognized by their traits as Tieflings, but your world could have it so that Tieflings, or some Tieflings, are able to "pass" unless carefully inspected (i.e. short horns easily covered by big hair, tails that fit into pants, etc.). But as far as the game's concerned, human's can be the color of grape soda, if that's what human look like in your world.
