If your ability scores only impact your roll and not your character’s personality or sense of self, then that’s fine but you’re not role playing at that point. You’re just playing a tactical board game which again is fine but isn’t really what most people believe is D&D.
The mental stats come with less defined RP penalties besides blown skill checks than the physical stats but are no less relevant. Claiming you can play a 3 wisdom character with no impact other than poor perception is as poor of a DM choice as not enforcing encumbrance on a 3 strength character as an example. At that point you are breaking immersion and game design philosophy.

I consider intelligence your ability to figure out a specific answer.
I consider wisdom to be understanding the importance of whether the answer is large or small.
Charisma is a very different attribute where you attract or repel people based on your ability to connect with people.
