Is it worth taking mage armour via Eldritch Adept feat so it can be cast at will?
OR is it better just taking mage armour as a 1st lvl spell and use a spell slot?
I am trying to decide whether its worth taking a feat so i can cast mage armour at will, anytime, anywhere or whether to have it as a 1st level spell slot.
Im playing divine soul sorcerer.
Joining campaign at lvl 7 with a current AC of 13.
Magic Initiate(Sorcerer) get Mage Armor and 2 more Sorcerer Cantrips. And you can use you spell slots to cast Mage Armor if you need to.
Actually Magic Initiate does not give you the ability to cast the 1st level spell you learn with your own spell slots. It’s once per long rest and that’s it.
If you can afford the feat I would do that to save the spell slots. But if you want the feat for something else using one slot per day, maybe two if you have long adventuring day isn’t bad
To be honest...it really depends on your character's scope. At the beginning with really low levels (like L1-4), it can be a very big boon to not to have to use your spell slots, because they're so precious.
By level 8 though, you have 12 spells slots to use (plus the potential for more via Metamagic), which is enough to be casting a spell almost every round (in most people's games, your mileage may vary), so losing a L1 slot is nothing. Just use Cantrips for that round (which you probably won't ever need to, but still). Personally, I'd take an ASI instead (Sorcerors benefit from Cha, Dex and Con, and I doubt you have them all at 20 by L8). Alternatively, get another feat (Warcaster is awesome) or even just another Eldritch Invocation.

I think the biggest problem with this is that, well... there's better choices for the Eldritch Adept feat. Mask of Many Faces, Eyes of the Runekeeper, Misty Visions... Mage Armor already lasts 8 hours and doesn't require concentration... it's an incredibly small investment for the benefits it provides, all things considered. I'm also of the mindset that you're better off taking Magic Initiate... even if your DM sticks with RAW and won't let you cast it again in the same day using spell slots... odds are better than not that you'll only really need to cast Mage Armor once per day anyway, so getting the ability to cast it at-will is only an asset if you're going through some kind of marathon adventuring day, or if you regularly come across enemies that disenchant you.
Take it as a spell - don't waste a feat or invocation on it. The only time I'd take it as an invocation is if your adventurer is a warlock AND there're several other adventurers in the party that don't wear armour and that you can cast it on.

Actually, the Invocation version of Mage Armor can only be cast on yourself.

I've never used the invocation so I completely missed that. Thanks for pointing that out! I can't ever see myself ever taking the invocation then.
It's more useful for Wizards and Sorcerers, who don't get any armor proficiencies. For a Warlock, who can just wear Light armor, it's at best a +1 AC, which is really hard to justify dedicating an Invocation to unless you're doing it for RP or something.
If you were playing an Abjuration Wiz I would tell you to take the invocation all day long and never look back. But for anyone else I would just take the spell and save the feat for something better.

Holy crap... I had to double-check Abjuration wizard and make sure it didn't say, "When you cast a spell using a spell slot"... but no, it's just if you ever cast any abjuration spell of 1st level or higher. It seems to apply no matter how you gain access to the spell... you could cast it with a magic item or a spell scroll, but as long as it's an Abjuration spell of 1st level or higher you get the Arcane Ward. Even if you're playing something like a Tortle that doesn't need Mage Armor, for an Abjuration Wizard it's still worth the effort of casting... it even has value mid-combat as a fairly substantial self-heal (kinda).
You can still cast with spell slots if you want to confer the benefit to somebody else - like maybe your party druid in their beast form, maybe you eventually gain access to find familiar somehow and want to give it a bit of protection. You get options.

I like it at low levels when the party has little to no magic items. The couple points of AC difference it makes actually helps then, and once you find some magic armor or other stuff to boost your AC you can trade it out for a different Invocation.

They say they are a divine soul sorcerer, not a warlock starting at level 7l.
At level 7 using up 1st level slot per day (Possibly 2 if you want to protect yourself while resting) is pretty small. Divine soul Sorcerers have very few spells known so a feat to get more is a option though Fey Touched or shadow touched are usually better.

Thank you for the correction. I always forget about the option to take magic initiate for your own class.

+1 on the Magic Initiate: Sorcerer feat.
You get a free cast per day.
