I am playing an intelligence based Kobold character, its an Alchemist Artificer and I want him to be absolutely obsessed with trap making; as Kobolds tend to be. And I wanted to ask for ways to play that or ideas to implement that into combat/ gameplay in general?? It’s an interesting idea to me but also incredibly new so yeah!!
Edit: was a homebrew class but it’s now an Alchemist Artificer!
Unfortunately, 5E does not have much in the way of rules for PCs making and using traps. Most of the time, traps are more of a defensive tool (set in an area you control before a fight in order to slow down and wound attackers) rather than something you can directly attack enemies with. If you weren't playing a custom class, I'd recommend running an Artillerist Artificer and reflavor you spells and class abilities to be trap themed.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
It's hard to recommend if you're running a homebrew class since we can't really know how it runs. As has been noted, the general dynamic of 5e and D&D in general is not one that lends itself to much trap laying. Traps are for when someone is coming to you, whereas a party of PCs is more often than not the ones going forth into someone else's turf. That's not to say you should abandon the concept altogether, but with the general dynamic it'd probably work better as more of an "if I get the opportunity" secondary personality trait rather than the core of their identity.
Hello! I have gone more the route actually! Going Alchemist Artificer but yeah i am planning on being a support and flavors things to be trap related, but yeah!

If that was directed at me (it's much better to use the Quote button than the Reply button), it's because the Artillerist's abilities are easier to flavor as trap effects (plus they get the Explosive Cannon ability at level 9, which really is a booby trap effect). The Alchemist is more of a buffing and support role.

Actually, Xanathar's Guide to Everything mentioned using tool proficiencies to make traps (I think it was Thieve's tools), and you could take inspiration from the kobold inventor in Mordekainen's Monsters of the Multiverse for some trap ideas. You could also just like buy a bunch of bear traps and put like acid vials in them or something.

Honestly those trap rules in XGtE are just enough to be really unhelpful because they give no context for what's a reasonable field of effect or trigger for the trap. And most of the kobold inventor's effects seem to add more creatures to the board, which is a bit of a stretch for a player to cobble together consistently.

What makes you recommend Artillerist?
