If I was good at making backstories for characters and wording the said stories nicely I would find that more enjoyable. Overall for someone who started playing an actual campaign yes it is fun. For me I like thinking of class concepts and synergies before I start making the character itself. Although I started this obsession for 2 reasons: 1 being that I think that I would die easily and 2 is ironically my thirst for combat cause it feels great to find out how a character works with their respective kit. Though I out of curiosity if you were the DM would you use your characters in your story. Cause I think the fact that you have over +100 characters would make some stories a fun experience to see them come to life in a campaign and see how the chracters and players interact with each other. https://1921681254.mx/
There is a different thread ( or 2) for discussing back stories but I generally prefer them fairly short so that isn’t a problem for me. After 40+ years I’m fairly familiar with how combos might play out but yes it’s still interesting to see the details click into place (or not). Also, after 40+ years I have accumulated a number of PCs ( don’t think it’s 100 yet) that I don’t really want to abandon so yes they have become NPCs in the campaign world I run (with different campaigns set in different parts of the world generally).
I understand the enjoyment of creating characters, especially when I get new species to build with. I have over 400 Characters created and made a backstory for most of them even though I may not keep the back storys lol.
I usually end up testing a build to see if its a pain to do. the structure of subclasses make things harder unless I homebrew….. and I hate having to homebrew for small things

sometimes when listening to music ill see what other fun or interesting characters i can design .....
I will mess about with them until i either decide this one is going nowhere and delete it or take a liking to it and keep it.
I have now kept 42 characters, all level 7 so i get a feel for them...... am i slightly crazy or does anyone experiment in creating for fun ?
I think it’s kind of weird when people don’t just randomly make characters.
Agreed, I do it all the time, both for fun for myself and when trying to advise folks on possibilities
