So I am currently theorycrafting a lv20 barbarian warlock, which probably already has made half of the people reading this disgusted by the idea. There are many problems mixing the two classes, such as locks getting skills to use charisma instead of strength, but rage only getting bonus damage when using strength. Biggest problem is the "If you are able to cast spells, you can't cast them or concentrate on them while raging". This cuts out concentration spell and direct use spells, so I was thinking of using spells that prepare something beforehand, before going into the Rage. Example, blink or spiritual weapon being cast BEFORE you rage, still being in effect after you rage.
So I have two main questions, first if these kind of prepare an effect beforehand without concentration spells do indeed work while raging, because I couldn't find confirmation of if it does. Second, what is the list for all those kinds of spells. I luckily do not need too many spells that are usable this way, since I was thinking that by using "Eldritch Smite" invocation it increases the usefulness of my spell slots, even while raging.
There is nothing saying that a Barbarian cannot pre-cast a duration spell that has a lasting effect which does not require concentration. It simply says you cannot cast and/or concentrate on a spell while Raging.
That said you are going to find that your idea is severely lacking. Possible pre-cast non-concentration spells: Cantrip: Minor Illusion Prestidigitation
1st: Charm Person Comprehend Languages Illusory Script
2nd: Enthrall Mirror Image
So as you can see, you're very limited in what you could pre-cast and, until level 2 spells, you're not going to have anything that really helps make you Barbarian harder.
If you went that route I'd say Invocations may be the trick you're looking for with spells being used when you're out of Rages.

You missed Armor of Agathys (1st Level). That could potentially be a very useful spell to cast before raging, and with scaling, it can be viable for quite a long while on a melee-focused character.
yoelleoy11, does it have to be Warlock, or are other spellcasting classes an option?

Thanks for that, I don't have my books atm so I had to reference the SRD on my phone, apparently it didn't have all the spells.
I think yeolleoy11 would get more mileage dipping into wizard or druid in terms of self-buff spells and some utility outside of Rage.
Well the character idea I had is for a warlock barbarian, but at this point I just wanna know for future reference in case I ever want to make a barbarian multiclass character. Also some patrons and feats let me get other class spells so I'd say that other spellcasting classes are an option.
EDIT: In case you want to know the character idea, its basically a mix between wanting a more "dark & ferocious" looking barbarian and doing a name pun with Kuma and Akuma, which means Bear and Demon in Japanese
There are other spells that could be useful if you're also including XGtE and it's also dependent on how your DM plays your opponents. As long as the DM doesn't metagame against the barbarian aspect of the character, having some damaging spells could help lure in creatures that are seeing an unarmored caster that is pinging them from distance to piss them off.
Having mold earth (xgte) can shape the battleground around you to limit access around you you would need a different way to get it than the base warlock cantrip list and its usefulness is pretty much limited to natural soundings. Minor illusion (phb) can be used in a similar way. Mage hand (phb) has uses. Lightning lure (scag) can drag enemies to you pre-rage, which is particularly useful with getting that last enemy in range. Magic stone (xgte) gives you some projectiles (or someone else that ran out of ammo or didn't prepare well). Thunderclap (xgte) can be a calling card while getting in some aoe prerage.
Armor of Agathys (PHB) would work and be very thematic. Arms of Hadar (PHB) might fit your tastes, but probably works better as a mass disengage plus damage. If you go celestial (xgte), you could cure wounds prerage or after a rage, particularly useful if you are a half-orc other race that has a cheat death. Hexblade (xgte) has false life, though the extra damage from Armor of Agathys probably beats the potential of up to 3 extra temp hit points from false life.
Blindness/deafness for the fiend (phb) or undying (scag), entrall (which was mentioned earlier) can focus enemies on you by limiting the perception checks to find others (extra crispy fun if you have rogues with you), and misty step to go along with the others that DMThac0 mentioned that I didn't.
Of course, nothing prevents you from using concentration spells to augment your fighting abilities during the instances that you aren't raging.
I figure that with everything (including the periapt), I'll be able to heal myself ~45 hp in a turn. If I was hit in the previous turn, that won't even lose rage. I made a list of useful spells at some point that I'll find and update this post later. It is admittedly a pretty short list. Also, I've considered adding 3 levels of divine soul sorcerer into the mix for warding bond. I think it could make for a great tank, but it might be a little bit short on damage. I certainly think the idea could work and I think it would be fun, but there are definite limitations and trade-offs.

I really like the combo of gift of the ever living ones and dwarven fortitude, adding in the periapt of wound closing to that combo and adding it to a barbearian is just demoralizing for anyone trying to kill the character. And can you imagine how powerful the life cleric is going to feel throw a healing word your way?
Definitely need the robe look, even if it is cut perfectly to allow proper movement for the barb but retaining the squishy caster look.
I really like the idea of the super healing dwarf with Gift of the Ever Living Ones, seems like a really fun tank. However I was looking to make my character alot more damage oriented, even at the cost of some tankines. I was at first thinking of a "dark" looking barbarian, but I now like the idea of a weak looking warlock that suddenly rages into a barbarian infront of the enemy, kinda like a hulk transformation, but instead explained by a "demon" possession or something similar.
So my current idea after reading what you guy wrote is the same as before, but adding a kinda "split" fighting style, while not raging he is casting and range spelling enemies like a normal warlock, but if an enemy gets into his face he "transforms" while raging and goes barbarian on their asses. So it is nice to know that I can indeed use some spells to prep before raging, but I can still use normal warlock spells normally. I was now thinking about which patron would be best, ive narrowed it down to 3 possible ones either due to the spells they give or the utility. Invocation's I already have a good idea, the classic eldritch blast stuff with eldritch smite and a bit of pact of the blade synergy (not the attacking twice one thought since it doesn't stack with barbarian extra attack).
So the 3 patrons I am currently thinking of are, The Fiend, The Hexblade and The Raven Queen.
So main benefit of The Fiend, good offensive spells that I can learn, and I can use fire shield before I rage, which stacked with armor of agathys should be pretty nice and "cool" looking. Only problem is that unlike armor of agathys it doesn't scale with spell slot and only lasts 10 minutes compared to agathys lasting 1 hour. The features are pretty good, Dark One's Blessing gives steady HP during a murder spree, Dark One's Own Luck is always useful, Fiendish Resistance in combination with bear totem rage means I can take resistance to psychic damage to be resistant to ALL damage while raging and Hurl Through Hell is a nice and cool thematic finisher that is usable even while raging.
The Hexblade is the obvious "melee warlock" choice. Has a few useful spells, but most of them are concentration smites that require me to hit with a weapon, which I will only do while raging, so unless I decided to whack someone while not raging I can't use them. Elemental Weapon had some potential but is useless due to needing concentration and not working with Improved Pact Weapon Invocation. One really good/fun spell you get though is Blink, it can be used pre rage to become a teleporting barbarian during a fight which is already terrifying for the enemy. Main usefulness of Hexblade is the hexes themselves, which are just glorious for any barbarian. Hex Warrior is however wasted, since it turns your damaging stat into charisma instead of strength or dexterity, which would be great if it weren't for the fact that rage bonus damage requires you to attack using strength. Accursed Specter, Armor of Hexes and Master of Hexes are just all good as well for a barbarian, more hexing, less getting hit and enslaving the slain.
Then there is the Raven Queen. Which gives a few good damaging spells and utility. It also gives spiritual weapon, which can be summoned pre raging and be used as your main bonus action while fighting, it also scales with spell slot which is always a bonus as a warlock. Now the patron features it gives aren't very fight oriented, but more utility. Sentinel Raven is just so much utility, it lets you run low wisdom safely, gives you darkvision, you can give it commands and see through its eyes up to 100 feet away, it can't be killed while it is with you and it can act as guard duty on its own during an entire rest. Raven shield is nice, but not the greatest amount of utility, harder to fail death saving throws and immune to being scared. Queen's Right Hand lets you cast Finger of Death once per long rest, which is a VERY strong damaging spell, only problem it cant be used while raging. Now the main reason I considered with patron is because of Soul of the Raven, which lets you basically become a raven. It of course provides more utility, being able to scout further than 100 feet with it and letting you move faster, 50 feet instead of 30-40 feet. Main reason I like this feature is because it gave me an idea of something the character could do at some point. Basically fly into the air as a raven over 200 feet into the sky above a enemy target, then transform back and while falling use all my pre rage spells, then rage mid air and attack the poor guy I land on, with eldritch smite as a bonus. From what I read falling damage is capped at 20d6, which is 120 bludgeoning damage max, with rage the max damage becomes 60, so a lv 20 barbarian should be able to survive falling from any height. Also because of advantage/disadvantage rules, using reckless I can cancel out disadvantage in case my DM would say it would be an attack with disadvantage. Of course I could end up in a cave adventure and my dreams of the flying/falling barbarian will be crushed.
So those are the reasons I am considering these patrons, which one would you guys recommend I use?
I think they all sound pretty cool and you've got a tough decision. I will say that with hex warrior, you don't have to use your charisma modifier, it's just making the weapon that you touch have a finesse like trait that gives you options. Thus, if you are hit with something that reduces your strength but not your charisma, you can still be somewhat effective in melee. Additionally, hex warrior does give you the flexibility to put your best stats somewhere other than strength if you can be assured that you would have access to something like Gauntlets of Ogre Power that would bump your strength afterward. You would still need 13 strength for the multiclass, but it does provide options.
I did have this image of a warlock without a weapon flinging carnage at enemies with only a caster's robes on. Seeing the caster with no armor AND no weapon who is causing pain would certainly draw me in closer. Sure there might be a dagger in there, but that's not that big of a deal... and then the warlock summons his pact weapon, a greatsword perhaps, and suddenly that decision looks not so great (doesn't work if they can see the greatsword on the warlock, you know something's up then). The problem is that creating a pact weapon (or summoning it) takes an action and I didn't see lots of options for bonus action attacks that didn't require spell slots or an Attack action on its turn. Maddening Hex could work if you wanted to use Hex in caster mode and would have used the spell already anyway. Cloak of Flies for some intimidation of the saps that fell for the weakling bit coupled with some poison damage equal to your modifier. But both of those require using invocations that didn't sound like you were planning on using. Of course, the darkness/devil's sight combo could negate the need for the barbarian side weapon being hidden and help the surprise of "Hulk Smash!"
But having the benefits of either Fiend or Raven Queen could be interesting (assuming that the DM allows UA material for Raven Queen). I'd definitely flesh out some details with the DM, as they might be willing to work with you on the action economy of creating a pact weapon and attacking on the same turn (perhaps on a limited basis) if they (and you) like that visual or on something else that you think fits your Lockbarian.
One last suggestion on race, if you want to preserve the armorless appearance without having to go quite as MAD as strength and charisma for offense and dexterity and constitution for defense, you could go Lizardfolk for 13 plus dex AC (though the stat bonuses won't help as much besides allowing an 12 for a constitution buy to get to 14 con) or Loxodon from the Ravnica book to get 12+Con AC with the same stats, but it actually increases your AC too. Then you "just" need strength, charisma, and constitution for offense and defense. Neither gets you as high as unarmored defense maxed, but do lessen the stat strain.
You can't cast them, but one cast you can concentrate on them, and use them if they have a duration. ie: Witch Bolt.
Wait no, Rage also stops concentration, including Witch Bolt even if you cast it before raging. You need non-concentration spells with a duration to cast before you rage, which will stay after you rage.
If you're okay with 3rd party content there's is the Morgrave Miscellany for Ebberon.
It as a Warlock Pact, called the Pact of the Host, wich gives you a Symbiot, basically it turns you Into Venom from Marvel...
When you get under the 50% hp mark, you can reluinquish the control to the Symbiot, and it will cover your body like an armor or suit, making your AC= to your CHA SCORE+CHA mod, and it adds your CHA mod to Str, Con and Dex.
You can't cast spells or concentrate on them.
Your character while inside the "Suit" is blind, but you can communicate telepathically with the Symbiot and give him orders, he has Blind sight and tremorsense.
You retain the use/benefits of class features, racials and Feats you have, your worn equipement is merged with your form and isn't usable/has any effects.
Your strikes deals 1D10 necrotic damage
If you kill a creature while in your Symbiot form, you need to make a WIS save, or else the Symbiot becomes berserk and start eating the corpse, you can't do anything in your turn while he do that, you can use an Intimidation/persuassion/Deception check to regain control.
And the Eldritch invocations given, with the pact allows you for more weird transformations; Wings, Bladed tail, Larger tremorsens, Increase of move and jump speed CHA mod x 5,Venomous spit attack and greater control over the symbiot...
Might pair pretty well with a Barbarian like Warlock...
When looking through spells in DnDBeyond, select your class, then for the concentration tab under advanced filters, select No. Once you have filtered those spells, sort by duration (descending). This puts all of the spells that would remain in effect while raging at the top, and instantaneous spells at the bottom which could only be cast when not raging.
I like the idea of casting booming blade followed by a bonus action rage. Now your enemy has a choice, stand face to face with a ferocious, ax-wielding maniac or run in fear. Either way, they're gonna get hurt.
I made a teleporting, aasimar Hexblade barbarian as a backup last summer, never used him, but he would have been scary for the DM to deal with (not that he was needed with the other formidable fighters we had). Several spells were mentioned already that I went with to work with raging. Armour of Agathys, mirror image, hmmm a few others, but Blink was a feasible option as well. Kind of hope to use him one day. He works fine at lvl 7, and only gets worse after that, maybe some ranks in fighter to make him more dangerous.

I've been considering trying this in AL for a while. My plan is to go for huge self-healing and tanking with a dwarf barbarian 6/warlock 14.

Kain de Frostberg- Dark Knight - (Vengeance Pal3/ Hexblade 9), Port Mourn
Kain de Draakberg-Dark Knight lvl8-Avergreen(DitA)
Thanks, this has helped a lot with my barbarian cleric!
