So I’m completely new to playing D&D, although I’ve read the books, UA’s and these forums extensively. I recently had the idea of making a Drow Seeker (2016 UA “The Faithful”) Warlock (long story short, Drow emerges from the Underdark at night, becomes fascinated by lights in the sky that DON’T hurt, finds that something up there is fascinated back).
My question then is, as someone who’s never played an actual campaign, how much does Sunlight Sensitivity really hurt you. That much disadvantage in sunlight seems harsh, and I worried I might severely limit my character if we’re not underground/inside. Has anyone else had experience playing Drow?
It depends on how often you and your DM remember to use it. But yes, depending on the campaign it could be quite harsh. Also, make sure your DM is OK with UA content. Particularly something that old which never got published, that often means it was problematic.
I'm currently playing a Drow cleric. It's not a big hurdle honestly. Anytime you are caught in sunlight I would recommend one of two options: AOE spells or use of combat tactics to give yourself advantage and offset the disadvantage. If all else fails just roll with it. You won't fail on your rolls everytime.

Lightning Strike - A rebranded Fire Bolt for Wizards & Sorcerers.
Spirit Bomb - A holy fireball for Clerics, Paladins, & Divine Soul Sorcerers!
Sword Dancer - A Cleric subclass specifically for the Drow goddess Eilistraee.
Focusing on save spells is a good start. There are also magic items to remove sensitivity (I think Knave's eye patch is the only official one, but the DM could also allow a reverse goggles of night that only get rid of sensitivity at uncommon).

Stay in the shade or do things that don't rely on attack rolls and perception checks?
