This was a difficult toss-up between Prismari, Quandrix, and Silverquill, for me.
Ultimately, I went with Quandrix…I’m digging the support features; especially the teleporting ability accessed at a reasonable character level.
Gaining “Guiding Bolt”, especially on a Wizard, is quite fun, as well.
The main reason for Quandrix is that I can easily create countless characters around this concept…mad scientist…planar traveler…eccentric hermit…etc.
I loved Prismari for its mechanics…it’s a fun, stylish subclass that can bolster their spells & movement.
I could see this being a reasonable alternative to an Evocation Wizard.
The Silverquill surprised me…I feel like it’s features are a bit disjointed in their theme…you have a debilitating / supportive mockery…then an inky “Darkness” spell you can see through baked-in, AND it damages…then you get “words of power” that can turn your damage spells into psychic or radiant damage…AND instantly charm or fear…AND inflict vulnerability…or a reaction-based resistance.
Whew…that’s a LOT.
Thing is…the “words of power” thing is a neat concept I wish the Wizard had explored with the “Onomancy” mechanics, replacing the “naming” convention.
Silverquill feels like several subclasses put together…and while all these traits suit a Silverquill student…I can’t really think of a character beyond that, that works with the theme of these features.
I don't get the Silverquill hate. In terms of mechanics that's one of the strongest 1st-level features I've ever seen, and I really like the general debuffing focus that the subclass has. I'm not sure I would ever take it as a Warlock, but Bard is a natural fit and it's tied with Chronurgist for me as the best supporty Wizard subclass.
Witherbloom is probably my second favorite - I love the ability to brew potions - but Prismari immediately gave me ideas for a build where you specialize in Fire, and then Thunderlight Jaunt up to your frontline, cast Careful Spell Fireball at your own feet, share your resistance with whatever hapless party members are in the blast radius, and then run back to safety without taking opportunity attacks. It's intensely stupid and I would do it over and over again.
My new poll is here! What is your favorite new subclass in Mages of Strixhaven and why?
Erean Cabenrith a Variant Human Cleric (Light Domain)
Eliem Lightblossom a High Elf Blood Hunter

Of these options, I like Quandrix the best. Followed by Prismari and Witherbloom.

That said…I really like the features.
Probably because it makes me a little power-mad.

A divination wizard from quandrix is a good idea
They use an abacus as an arcane focus
