Ok so I have a lizardfolk rune knight ( ddb.ac/characters/76459765/zIwrJU )
I love the character but fighter and rune knight aren't that interesting anymore so I'm considering dual/multiclassing
My ideas so far are to go barbarian up to 4 or 5 and if barbarian wasn't cutting it potentially take another class from there
Heres the only main issue I can't just randomly take on any subclass I have to have an explainable reason for it so barbarian subclasses I can have are as follows
Ancestral guardian- my character is fighting for his people so his ancestors would step in to help
Wild magic- long exposure to the runes gave him some magical properties that he has little control over
Beast- he's a werewolf (long story)
Zelot- Ares likes my character and has blessed me so it fits in my book
Any ideas are welcome I understand you guys won't know his whole story but that's why I'm here to give that information
All of those make sense, the question is which one seems more interesting to you. Remember you can’t rage wearing heavy armor. Your unarmored defense will be good, but you might want to see just where your AC lands after you take off the armor.
At level 7 rune knight, you can get the rune that gives you the same resistance as a raging barb.
Don’t take a 3rd class. Triple class characters rarely work well. And with your scores, you coukd go rogue, which doesn’t work well with barbs, or wizard/artificer, which also don’t work well with barbs.
Important side note: the extra attack feature from fighter and barb don’t stack. So either only take barb up to 4, or decide to keep on going with it past 5. But going just to 5 doesn’t help you.
You’ve already got 6 levels in Fighter, so taking Barbarian to 5th level will just be a waste for you since the two different instances of Extra Attack won’t stack together. I wouldn’t take more than 3-4 level at most, 3 if you really want a subclass (you could stop earlier and not take one), or 4 if you want that ASI.
Ancestral Guardian let’s you tank like a mofo, but it won’t let you “do” very much more than what you already do other than Rage.
Beast means not needing magic weapons eventually, but you already have some which will be more effective than your natural weapons, so….
The Zealot’s Divine Fury feature is nice if you take enough levels in Barbarian, and by enough I mean all of them. Since you’re not likely to get a tone of Barb levels….
As much as it pains me to say it, your best bet for a Barbarian is pro’ly the Wild Magic Barby.
Honestly though, if Ares got your back you may want to bump your Cha to 13 next ASI and go Paladin for 3-4 levels. 🤷♂️ Just a thought.
Not gonna lie not like an expert here this is my 3rd character I've actually played didn't know extra attacks didn't stack like that thanks for the information

If you're already a 6th level Rune Knight, you can just take it to 7th level and gain the Hill Rune, which makes you a semi-barbarian anyway:
This rune’s magic bestows a resilience reminiscent of a hill giant. While wearing or carrying an object that bears this rune, you have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance against poison damage.
In addition, you can invoke the rune as a bonus action, gaining resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage for 1 minute. Once you invoke this rune, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
I'd consider a multiclass that gives you a whole different slate of abilities to play with -- for instance, I'm currently playing a Rune Knight who's got levels in Aberrant Mind sorcerer, giving me ranged damage spells, weird brain stuff and a Green-Flame Blade/Quicken Spell combo for when I really want to pile on the damage in one round

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
I would suggest staying on with Rune Knight, but it is my favourite subclass so I may be biased. I'm interested in why you feel that fighter and specifically Rune Knight aren't interesting any more?
Reasons to continue:
At level 7, you get another Rune, which many have pointed out already, and there are a few good options here:
Purely combat wise, Hill rune gives you some of what barbarian offers by giving you pierce/slash/bludgeon resistance for one minute, it also gives poison resistance as long as you're wearing the item the rune is on.
For RP skill bolstering, you could take Frost rune, as it gives advantage on intimidation AND animal handling, both of which you're proficient in, however of all the runes I think it's active is probably the least satisfying
Storm Rune is just amazing
Fire rune is one of my favourites because of the tool expertise it grants, however if you don't get much downtime to use them this may vary
You also get another excellent reaction to use in Runic shield.
Also, with con 20 your Rune Knight ability save DC is high, so you're well rewarded by taking those runes.
At level 8 you get another ASI/Feat, reason enough to continue.
Level 9 isn't may favourite, but when you pull it off Indomitable is amazing, but considering what comes next it is well worth it
Level 10 you get another rune, and your damage on Giant's might goes up. Plus you grow 3d4 inches, which can be a fun RP device.
Level 11 you get to attack 3 times, which is more fun in combat than two attacks
Level 12 is another ASI/feat, enough said
Level 13 is a little underwhelming, but once again the next two levels make up for it
Level 14 is an ASI/feat.
Level 15, assuming you make it this far, gives you a fifth rune! More importantly however you can use each rune twice per short rest, going from 4 spell-like abilities per short rest to 10 spell-like abilities per short rest, which is amazing.
I won't go further because most campaigns rarely do.
Reasons not to continue:
You really aren't enjoying the character, in which case by all means change, or even roll a new character
This is really the most important thing, you enjoy playing how you play, and nobody here can tell you otherwise, no matter how much they(I) might love the subclass.
If you did dip into another class, based on your stat spread I like Rogue - extra skill, expertise to lean into something that you're given advantage in from your runes, giving you more RP/out of combat options. Cunning action is great. Only issue is that you don't have a weapon that I saw capable of benefiting from sneak attack if you went heavily down Rogue.
Paladin would be nice, but you'd have to spend your next ASI on Charisma, I really like Ranger too, but next ASI would be wisdom.
Ultimately though go with what you think will be most fun.
As mentioned, I'd probably also stick with Fighter. Not only because of the 7th level rune but mostly because the playstyle won't really be that much different if you add a few levels of Barbarian.
Is there anything in particular that you think isn't interesting and maybe we can help you with that?
I would stick with Rune Knight. At level 7 it gets kind of silly how many reaction spell like abilities they have with Cloud Rune, Storm Rune, Stone Rune, and Runic Shield.
You basically shape the outcome of the round with your reaction in clutch moments each round with the equivalent of a silvery barbs or hold monster as a reaction.
I was getting a little bored with my current rune knight character until I hit 7, and now Im a little worried that Im worried that my shenanigans are too impactful on the game. The best part is, Im getting to spend ASI's flavoring my character with spells and utility feats.

I didn't even consider paladin not sure what path would fit Ares never played a paladin and know nothing about the oaths or Greek mythology lol

Ares was the Greek god of War, so something like the Oath of Conquest would fit, or the Oath of Glory.
