So I got this sort of “bruiser” character in the works...probably a Mountain Dwarf, armed with a maul (heavy, two-handed weapon)...occasionally pummels targets with their fists.
Looking over Cavalier Fighter...it’s got some great features for this kind of character: plenty of opportunities to smack a target upside with a maul, knocking them prone, and generally punishing enemies who happen by / try to ignore them.
The capstone seems quite potent, as well...essentially a “free hit” for any single enemy who gets too close. Perfect for mobs.
Now...this character is getting stacked-up against either a Vengeance Paladin or Conquest Paladin...as in, I’m either making this hammer-toting warrior a Fighter or a Paladin...they want to hit often, hit HARD, and generally terrify.
How well does a Cavalier Fighter stack up against those two Paladin subclasses, or other Fighter subclasses in general?
Broadly speaking, Cavaliers and all Paladins devote more of their build to tanking than you seem interested in. If all you care about is melee murder and doing it hard, and you are particularly interested in a maul or greatsword, a Samurai is probably your best bet. If that line about fists meant you also want some combat tricks, Battle Masters aren't slouches, either.
I suppose the biggest interest of the Cavalier is a nice blend of hitting often with their subclass features, as well as drawing “threat” like a tank...that “Mark” feature really lets you call out that one “worthy” challenger...also reducing enemy movement to zero (sort of like hitting them so hard; they’re just dazed).
Battlemaster may win out, however...these new maneuvers are just so very good.
Samurai are peculiar to me...they seem to be about hitting often, and with advantage, true...but strangely, I like the balance of defense / offense the Cavalier provides.

There are some important differences, but you should consider how much you like taking a non-Cavalier build (like Samurai) and the Sentinel feat. Mind you, Cavaliers are awesome - I guess I just misunderstood your question.
