Coming back from the dead is an ordeal. The target takes a −4 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. Every time the target finishes a long rest, the penalty is reduced by 1 until it disappears.
A player of mine recently pointed out to me that he doesn't believe there is a way to apply this negative mod as of current. He attempted to override his ability score modifiers in order to simulate a -4 to his rolls, but we quickly realized this would affect more than just his rolls as it will also harm his Maximum HP (Consitution) and his Paladin Aura (Charisma).
Is there an effective way to simulate this effect in DnD Beyond as of now? Or will we be better off just keeping track of it in our heads?

You could use feats. Make four feats called “resurrection penalty 1” through “resurrection penalty 4.” And attach them all directly to the character sheet under “Features and Traits”—>”Feats”—>”Manage Feats.” Every morning that the PC wakes up the Player just removes one of them (using the same method) until they’re all gone. Each one can be identical other than the name so it won’t even matter which order they get removed. Each one will use the same 4 modifiers:
Maximum HP is not something normally considered an ability check.... Likewise Paladin Aura.... It affects checks, not the modifier itself.
This is the exact problem I am describing.
We can not apply the -4 mod to ability scores as this will affect non ability checks, i.e. Paladin Aura, Maximum HP.
This is because while apply a -4 to the player's constitution mod will have the desired effect (applying a -4 to constitution rolls), DnD Beyond will use this new value to automatically calculate maximum HP and will now have an additional undesired effect.
Read what I wrote more closely. I never said to give them any negatives to “Ability Scores,” I told you to specifically modify “Ability Checks,” “Saving Throws,” “Ranged Attacks,” and “Melee Attacks.”
All of those “-1” modifiers will add up equaling -4 to the each Ability Checks, Saving Throws, and all Attacks. Every time they remove a feat, it will drop, so -3, -2, -1, all better.

I was responding to the other comment that I quoted to clarify the issue. We had already changed the ability score before this thread was created. This thread was created because that solution did not work.
I did use a solution similar to what you proposed. I created a -4 feat, -3 feat. -2 feat. and a -1 feat as to not need to have 4 feats enabled on the character at once. This solution worked better for our purposes and was inspired by your solution.
So, let me get this straight. Nobody can remember to calculate a -4 penalty to attack rolls, ability checks and saving throws? I mean, really? How is this any different than keeping track of Cover modifiers, Bane or Bless modifiers, etc?
I find it amusing that the solution of the problem involved more work, in my opinion, than the problem itself merited. In the defense of creating the multiple feats, once it's set up, it's there for the next character's Resurrection penalties, LOL.

Agreed, but they asked so I obliged.
And they made 4 feats anyway, but their way they have to remove a feat and add the correct feat every LR, where with my idea, you just add all four at once and then remove them one at a time (and it wouldn’t matter in which order so less possibility for mistakes) It would have been less work to do since you could make the feat once and just clone it and change the name. So less work over all. In fact, I could have made the four feats in the same time it took me to explain it. 🤷♂️
As long as they’re happy, I’m happy to have helped.

Ya got me. It's my character, and I'm pretty new to D&D. OP has been doing a good job trying to help me keep track of everything I've got cuz things change when I level up and either I'm not looking in the right place or it's not telling me they changed. I just asked him if there was something like this out here and he didn't know so he asked for me.

Are the feats working well for you? That’s all I care about. Why you want it is irrelevant, in fact it’s not even a bad idea, I wish the character sheet just did that. But is the homebrew working to specifications?

Yeah. We just ran our first session with it, and all the roles seemed to work out well. Thanks for the help!
I'm currently trying to use this to act as stress from van richtens guide. I am trying to find a way to copy the luck feat for the charges per day, if there was any way for it to mark the negative mod for any of the boxes checked id be so happy.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about with the charges. Do you want them to be able to use a charge to negate the effects, or are you trying to find a way to automatically make them remove one of the modifiers on each long rest?

No, the number of uses will not affect the total modifiers. There is currently no way for the system to do “temporary” effects, or things with “on/off” functionality like that. The boxes just keep count, that’s all they do. The effects are hard baked into the coding.
I am unfamiliar with Van Richten’s Guide, or the “stress” system you mentioned. However, if they operate in any way like that discussed above, the only way to simulate it is with multiple applications of the feat as I suggested, or with multiple iterations of it the way V_A_o_R did it.
I want to find a way to reflect the negative modifier on the character sheets, As stress goes up the modifier gets bigger, my players have to do it manually which is just fine, but if there is a way. IamSposta has a great work around, we cant have everything we want and DNDB has been a dream come true for us dms.
