l have this idea for a pc that is always asleep, but is fully aware of their surroundings, can still walk, talk ect and am makeing this to get opinions on my ideas. (think of the leader of the coral peacocks from black clover as a example)
i was thinking the character would be a warlock cursed by their patron to be asleep ,but able to do stuff via strong psychic powers, (ie to talk they send the words mind to mind,or they hover rather then walk ect maybe have a version of mage hand that can work like a normal hand when in normal arm length ie when it is used in the normal arm span it works like a real hand but outside of that normal arm span it works like normal?) also they are immune to sleep spells cause they are already asleep,(but fully aware). this would make them great sentreys, but i am not sure on how to have them rest (short or long). also what parton should i use? is there a "god of sleep" or something? their spells would likely revolve around makeing other people fall asleep and maybe feed on their dreams (like the pokemon darkrai)
what are your thoughts on what my race/stats should be?
I feel like even "sleeping" characters would need to actively rest their bodies from time to time so I'd say that resting is still something the character would do, though not nearly as often, but during this time they'd be actually "asleep" so unable to do anything.
For deities, I don't think there is one for sleep but for the sloth domain there is Erevan the trickster god and honestly putting someone to sleep but having them still active sounds right up a trickster god's alley https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Erevan_Ilesere
If you are thinking of going warlock you could go Great Old One but tweak it to have a powerful Beholder as your patron (maybe Xanathar), they dream other beholders into being so maybe you character is asleep and dreams of the real world and is unknowing walking, talking, having adventures etc in the real world, kind of like a beholder version of the Matrix or Inception, and then maybe when they sleep in their dream world they are awake in the real world and it all seems strangely familiar but also quite mundane.
All manner of races/stat combos could be plausible depending on your play style or what you intend to do.
I think the best way to do this would be to use a race that is actually immune to sleep, like elf, half elf, kalashtar, or warforged. That way they can't be put to sleep (since they are supposed to already be sleeping).
Kalashtar might actually be a good one because they also get telepathy. Elf and warforged are my next choices because they can stay alert while they rest (someone who is always asleep shouldn't be less aware while resting.
Hmmm. Sounds like crazy flavour but with no real effect?
Since they can see, talk, walk around and move things, are they actually sleeping? What effect does this have on the game other than that they have their eyes closed all the time?
It's an interesting idea for sure, but it's an extreme one to go to if it has no effect. It's a bit like having a character whose hair and skin are bright purple and has ten horns on their head, but they look normal to everyone else. I mean, technically they are sleeping but actually they aren't.
That stated, I'm not one to provide a non-standard full-time advantage without an accompanying disadvantage.
To deviate from fantasy. A person's brain needs rest. In that period, a person's awareness is extremely reduced. Since a brain cannot cease to function, it twiddles its thumbs and daydreams the hours away to fill in the huge gaps of wasted processing.
To return to fantasy, one could affect the character's awareness negatively as well as being easily deceived. (Outside of fantasy, the strangest things can make sense in a dream.)

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
To make it more viable I would say disadvantage on perception checks to give it more balance or something along those lines. And for the rests probably shorten them and say they went in a deep sleep for a few hours to fully recover. These are only suggestions and if it needs more balancing I'm open to ideas cause I want to try this too.

If not a warlock, you could make a cleric of the sloth domain who became so attuned to their domain that they entered an eternal slumber or something:

Full of rice, beans, and bad ideas.

Also just as an aside....I have a Sorcerer Origin called Murmuring Mystic that might work for you if you wanted to go Sorcerer instead.....https://www.dndbeyond.com/subclasses/187017-murmuring-mystic

This is fantasy. "Go nuts" is my go-to rule.
