I'm starting DMing again (after a 20 years hiatus) with a new, group and I'd like to run the Lost Mine of Phandelver.
We play in a low-magic setting, so my question is, can I replace the 'magic cave' by a gold mine or something similar without too much modifications? The magic forge thing just doesn't match with what we like.
You're the dice Jesus you can do whatever you want. There are several things you may need to change like the magic item workshop inside of Wave Echo but other than that it shouldn't be too difficult. You could turn it into a mine/forge that produced pristine weaponry and armor or something like that.
mithral, adamantite, take your pick. I would suggest leaving the forge itself in some way to give you players a temporary boost near the end of the adventure. Maybe retool it as a weapons repair shop that grants a temporary +1 to gear repaired there if you are that afraid of magic in your campaign. Or even some magical being that bestows temporary buffs to your gear.

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
