Discuss how to level up your players to play something like a adventure module or to fight the BBEG. Help newer Dungeon Masters learn how to level their players according to their progress in the story.
What I am struggling with is how to level up my [quickly] to level 3 so they can play the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure module in our 6 hour session.
I don't dish out xp. I just give levels. First session players jumped to level 3. Second session 4. Next session Sunday they'll be 5.
It's all needed since I put them through enough with fights, puzzles, traps and skill challenges on top of rp with themselves and the NPCs. Plus they on the first session woke up a slumbering ancient black dragon along with a crazy powerful sorcerer who wields a very special staff.
Players can level as fast as the GM decides on whatever basis they desire. Luckily my players are good at learning their new stuff beforehand and prepare spell cards and the like. If it got to a point where they were a bit overwhelmed with new abilities I'd won't level them until they have a better grasp.
As a DM you control how much experience PCs get. Just level them up at the end of each session (or every 2-3 hours if you play long sessions) if you want.
