So I just created a homebrew version of Infestation called "Infestation - Spiders" (https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/215777-infestation-spiders). I've got it mostly how I want it, but when I load it onto a character I create, the damage doesn't scale properly with levels. It's supposed to gain 1d4 poison damage at 5 (total 2d4) , another at 11 (3d4), and a final one at 17 (4d4). It's correctly stated in the description, but when I added the spell onto a level 20 character, it still displayed the damage as 1d4 poison. Can anybody walk me through how to fix that?
I went into the level scaling tab and added an "Additional Points" on the 1d4 poison and selected 1d4 for levels 5, 11, and 17, but I feel like I did it incorrectly.
Rather than give the answer I'm going to instead offer 3 things for considerations to help you find the answer yourself, which should help with this and any future homebrew:
1. See if there is a spell you have access to that does something similar. In this case, the levelled damage can be found on various cantrips. If you copy that spell you will see what modifiers were used and how it was set up. You can replicate the method, choosing different die/type/etc as needed for your own homebrew.
2. Test it before publishing. No point publishing something that doesn't work and "creating new version" presents significant problems with races with subraces. Better to get it right first. You can use anything you make without publishing it, after all.
3. If you're stuck, try the Homebrew forum. The people that most frequent there are more interested in helping you with homebrew and it's a bit of courtesy so mods don't have to move your post.
