I am going to be running a game of SKT, but only have 2 players. One of the players is interested in playing two different characters. The other player wishes to play with 1 single character but does not mind that the other player is playing 2. Would it be advisable to let this slide? I know SKT is supposed to be for 4-6 player groups. What are some ways I could balance this for them so both players can have a good experience? What if the player with a single character rolls worse than the player with 2 for starting stats?
My question is this being played in person or online? Cause if its through online means (due to obvious reason) why not recruit more players from the LFG/LFP? Tons of people looking for games these days.
I'd recommend against it due to the sole fact one player is getting more play time than the other. At first it might be ok, but after prolonged battles or scitzo type RP it might get tiring for the odd player.
I'd add DM pc's if this was the only option specifically built for your parties needs. I've seen people play two characters, but only when a player couldnt show up and playing short a player was more acceptable than not playing at all.
it is an online group, but not a group open to players outside of who is already in it. My group has the players to make a full party of 4, but only two of the members are interested in joining for the campaign.
I thought about DM PC's at first, but both players (who have had experience with DM PC's already) are against them. They both agreed that they'd rather the players have control over another character instead, even though one of the players would prefer to not control multiple characters.
I am open to suggestions on how I can make this campaign balanced for two players, also. The only suggestions I got (on other forums) are to replace the giants, which doesn't work for this campaign at all. I am aware of Gestalt rules also, but from my experience, going with it just makes Published Adventures trivial for the players.
Maybe try using the sidekick rules from the starter set? You can RP them like NPCs, and then let your players run them in combat. The main issue with DMPCs is when the DM is using them to take the spotlight all the time. Make sure to let your players be the ones driving the story, and that you never solve problems for them and you should be fine.
Another option that might be cool is giving them pets/animal/monster followers. You could see if they would be interested in starting out with a buffed up Dire Wolf or Pseudodragon to help them out.
You could also let them start out with stronger equipment, maybe even a magic item or two

Start them out a level or two ahead of normal.
Just a few ideas.
I've DM'd in person games where some players had two characters--due to low player numbers. It worked o.k. for us.
