TL:DR: I have a beastmaster class character and I want to weaponize a horse or understand weapons a horse can wield in a Greek setting. This may require some inventive thinking...
The full story is my character will be a follower of Poseidon and is looking to offer him a horse worthy of him as a gift. I am currently working on lore stuff but also how to make the horse a useful fighter when the situation arises.
Any help would be appreciated. The initial creature will be a pony (google search should pull up stats). It fits the 1/4 medium limit for choosing a beast.
A combination of both but I would prefer to ride. Im thinking one handed trident dueling style, with a net in the other hand. Fighting from the top but could handle being on the ground.
A spike on the head sounds ideal and I could see this going towards chariot. Im just trying to think where I would place the blades on the side of the horse. Even maybe its mouth? Double spiked head?
I could definitely see enchanted items being a thing but I will need to see what happens in game (I dont want to bring in a new character to the dm expecting enchanted equipment off the bat!).
You wanna know the absolute best way to weaponize a horse? The same way people weaponized horses for thousands of years:
Put a rider on it. 😉
But in all seriousness, it would be very fitting for Poseidon to grant a 1ce/LR casting of Find Steed that could only summon a Warhorse. It would be practically immortal since it can be resummoned daily. Most mounts will die to a single AOE, so that is a huge bonus.
If you really wanted to juice it up a ton with a very minor change, allow the beastie to act as an Independent Mount. It has the intelligence for it with the boost from the spell, so that’s great. But by letting the thing act as an Independent Mount it can Attack all by itself. A Warhorse’s Trampling Charge is a fantastic weapon.
If you want to make it even better, allow it to keep the PC’s initiative even though it is Independent. That is another great boost because it means that coordinations are easier.
And if you want to really put a cherry on top, have it follow the PC’s commands even though it is independent.
Without really adding anything physical to the horse itself, you would have just gave that player a big bonus this way.
