I'm trying to learn to create DDB homebrew magic items for my players. I've had some success with a few previous attempts but this one has me stumped. Its based on a magic item I found online HERE
Here is what i have so far....
Tooth & Claw
These are a pair of matched wakizashi that magically resonate together, so you must be wielding both to gain the benefit of either. However attuning them only counts as attuning to one item.
You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with these weapons. When you hit a creature with "Tooth", you gain a +1 bonus to your AC until the start of your next turn. When you hit a creature with "Claw", the target takes extra Psychic Damage equal to your Martial Arts die.
When you make an unarmed strike as part of your Martial Arts or Flurry of Blows features you can instead attack with whichever sword is in your offhand and add your ability modifier to the damage roll.
In addition you can spend 3 ki points as an action, to cast Daylight using "Tooth" or Darkness using "Claw".
I have unfortunately hit several snags with the homebrew tools.
1) Should I create 2 individual swords? If so how do I indicate only 1 attunement slot is needed?
2) How do I indicate to the player that they are dual wield? When I tick to customise Dual Wield box, it removes it from the attack action. Do I need to "Lock" one of them to the offhand position? I want my player to call which magical benefit (bonus AC or bonus psychic damage) they want this round by choosing which sword to attack with using their main hand, the offhand sword just adds extra piercing damage.
3) Is it possible to apply the AC bonus automatically to their sheet on every hit and reset it at the end of the combat round?
4) Is it possible to automatically deduct the ki points when they cast a spell using the swords?
5) Do you think this is a balanced magic item in general?
I've investigated 'snippets' and read through a bunch of Stormknight's useful tutorial posts but cant seem to work this stuff out. Any help from the community would be much appreciated.
1 & 2) Make it a single two-handed weapon that grants an additional attack as a bonus action and requires at least one attack be made with each. (Sorta like a scimitar of speed.) So you would actually make 3, Tooth (which does nothing), Claw (which does nothing), and Tooth & Claw.

"Balanced" is all relevant to the level of the characters, but I don't see any problems with it for a character of level 7+
