I am trying to make an item that allows the player to increase the number of damage dice rolled by 1. I know there are ways to increase it by a specific dice (e.g., 1d4), however I am trying to make it so the dice added depends on the dice rolled.
Is there a way to make it, like, 1dX, where X would be the original dice rolled?
Cheers!
PS: What I'm basically trying to achieve something similar to the Brute trait that the Gladiator and Bugbear have, but through an item that automatically adds +1 dmg die.
Nope, there’s no way for an item to add a damage die because Magic Items cannot have actions attached. Even if it could it couldn’t add an unspecified size die. Also, the Gladiator background doesn’t add any dice to any damage roll, so I’m not sure what you mean.
I was talking about the monster Gladiator (and Bugbear). They have the Brute trait (Brute. A melee weapon deals one extra die of its damage when the gladiator hits with it (included in the attack)).
Anywho, it's a shame :c I think - code-wise - should be possible, but I understand that would be too in-depth for what D&D Beyond as a tool is meant to be.
Ahh, ha ha. That makes sense. It never occurred to me to consider monsters when contemplating a magic item for PCs. The first things that came to my mind were the Barbarian’s Brutal Critical, and the Half-Orc’s Savage Attacks. As a feature and a trait (respectively), those can have Actions attached, and even they cannot automatically add additional damage dice since features, traits, and feats are not capable of interacting with anything other than themselves. (That’s why GWM, Sharpshooter, and PAM can’t automatically do their things either.)
