I am currently working on a race I can play in campaigns that allow homebrew. I intend to give it the ability to change its ASIs, like as described in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, but I'm not sure how. Anyone who can help?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Gruumsh has one eye. The left half of a bull also has one eye. A bull's eye is something you'd find in a science lab. Saline solution is also something you'd find in a science lab. Saline solution is just a fancy word for brine. Brine is seawater. Therefore, Gruumsh One-Eye is the left half of a sea god. Q.E.D.!
I would also like an answer, if anyone has managed to make this work seamlessly. I've made a bit of progress, but it's a little hinky and it's messing with my OCD. :-)
When you make a homebrew race, you can create the normal "Ability Score Increase" trait that assigns a +2 to one ability score and a +1 to another (for example). To use the "Origin Optional Ability Score Increase" feature from Tasha's, you just make another trait and call it something like "Optional Ability Score Increase", but set its "Feature Type" to "Replacement" and select the original "Ability Score Increase" trait as the one to be replaced (see below).
The problem is, if you want to let them choose scores, it comes out messy. If you just grant them new Modifiers that have: "Bonus - Choose an Ability Score" with values of +1 and +2, respectively, you get to choose them but it doesn't tell you which box is the +1 and which is the +2. Alternatively, you can use "Options" instead of just granting a normal "Modifier" bonus, but I can't make that look like the official content either. Normally (say, with a Goblin) you'd see two boxes with the optional content that each say "Choose an ability score to increase by +1" and "Choose an ability score to increase by +2". But if you try to do the "Options" yourself, you have boxes that say "Choose a level 1 feature" followed by a second drop-down box with your choices, and it just doesn't look clean. Below is a picture of the first option to increase a score by +1 - I'm using the "Granted" checkbox to try and avoid the duplicate drop-down menus, and I've removed the "1,1" level choices from the first picture to try and just grant both modifiers at 1st level...
The more I look at existing, official races, the more it seems to me like there is simply an option missing in the Modifier interface. We can choose “Choose an ability score” from the “Bonus” selection options, but it looks like all the official races have specific options that read “Choose an ability score to increase by 1” etc. and we don’t have access to that in homebrew. I don’t believe this is tied to the “name” field of an option, but rather the drop-down menu within the Modifier section after filtering for Bonus.
Thank you so very much for making sense of their semi-complicated system! I really appreciate it!
However, I did exactly what you showed here, but there's still no drop-down menu to choose the ability score bonus. Do I need to make an action for that?
UPDATE: Nevermind, it totally works now!! Yay me LOL
Whenever you add anything to, change anything on, or remove anything from any homebrew, you MUST re-save the entire thing using the main [SAVE CHANGES] button under Basic Information or the system won’t pick up your changes. After that it can sometimes take up to 20 minutes for those changes to push through to the character builder/sheet.
This doesn't seem to be working for me for whatever reason, I followed it 100% and yet no optional trait replacement appears.
You set it as a “Replacement” (not “Granted”) feature? Yes?

Then it’s a two-step process:
ENABLING CONTENT FOR YOUR CHARACTER
Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is part of the core setting for Dungeons & Dragons, so there isn't a toggle switch in the character builder to enable/disable the content. It does however provide two significant sets of optional rules: customizing your origin, and optional class features. Both of these can be enabled/disabled on a per character basis, as well as allowing you to choose which of the options you want!
CUSTOMIZING YOUR ORIGIN
When you make your D&D character, you have an array of options in the Player’s Handbook and other books, to create the sort of adventurer you want. The "Customizing your Origin" rules add to those options, making it possible to realize even more character concepts.
These options are accessible using the menu in the character builder (see the image below)and include changing: Ability Score Increases, Languages, and Proficiencies.
The Custom Lineage option shown in the sidebar of the chapter are supported using the Custom Lineage Race in the Character Builder.
ISSUE - stacking Ability Scores. We are aware that our current implementation of swapping ASI (Ability Score Increases) doesn't enforce the restriction that each ASI cannot be places in an Ability Score that already has an increase (see quoted rule below). We are planning to work on addressing this.
Take any ability score increase you gain in your race or subrace and apply it to an ability score of your choice. If you gain more than one increase, you can’t apply those increases to the same ability score, and you can’t increase a score above 20.
I hope that helps. If you are still having an issue lemme know here.

also need this
This seems like something that just needs a checkbox in the future since racial stat replacements are official.
Oh thread of old I call upon you to rise again
Has this ever been implemented? Running some homebrew races from Grim Hollow and cant figure this part out.
I'm also trying to figure this out. I couldn't find where it could be done as homebrew anywhere. I *am* glad it's not just me lol!
I am burdened with glorious purpose.
No matter where you go, there you are.
If someone tries to kill you, you try to kill them right back!
You do it like this:
I’m sure youse all can figure the rest out from there.
