So I'm new to D&D and I want to make a homebrew puppet race, I want to make my character particularly a druid. I was wondering if Druids are able to manipulate elements like Metal or Wood (hense the puppet). I had an idea where the character has to like, turn into a shadow like thing to manipulate the puppet, so its like you have to disappear to pilot it. I'm not sure I'm explaining this correctly and I've never really designed a D&D character and I need some help. Could I get some links or someone tell me what I could do to make this character similar to how I've invisioned them?
--Edit-- Could I make a changeling druid character that shifts into a Warforged?
If it were me in your situation, I would want someone to tell me to just play something out of one of the books the first time through and save this shadow-puppet idea for my second character after I’ve gotten an idea about how the game works.
Nothing like you described comes to mind. Probably requires some intense reflavoring and homebrew.
I'd recommend sticking to the books and just changing descriptions of your character, rather than trying to balance made up abilities (especially as a newby this isn't easy).
It definitely sounds like some very heavy lifting for anyone to try to create. If I could offer one suggestion that might give you something close to what you want, try checking out the Warforged race, or Autognomes. They might give you a lot of the flavor of a living construct that you are looking for, without overcomplicating your first experience.
