Hey everyone, I hope you are having a great day! I am making this thread regarding a homebrew feat I would like to make for my Elven archer I am playing. I am not the best at homebrewing stuff, at least balanced homebrew lmao, so I am in need of help and where better to ask. I had the Idea of this feat having the Prerequisite of the Elven accuracy feat and adding on to the Deadly accurate elven archer trope! Here is what I have so far:
Elven Huntsmen
Prerequisite: Requires the Archery fighting style and the Elven accuracy feat
With an uncanny prowess as a tracker and hunter, your elven heritage grants you unmatched skills in the art of archery, bestowing the following benefits:
- Increase your Dexterity or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20
- If you made an attack with a bow and the attack roll was over 23, you gain an additional attack using your bow. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per short or long rest.
I'd like to know if this feat is balanced and also if there are any other features that could be added to it that would benefit a character in combat further, some cool out of combat features that maybe play into a hunter/tracker character, or just a creative novelty feature that adds to the elven flavor of the feat!
You didn’t require the additional attack to use either a bonus action or reaction, and you didn’t limit how many times it could be used per turn, so someone could theoretically use it 6 times in a row on the same turn. Not balanced.
Also, with an attack bonus as high as +13 (+17 with the right magic items), hitting that DC 23 will be very easy requiring only a 10+ (6+) on the d20 roll. With advantage and elven accuracy that’s practically guaranteed. Not balanced.
You made it refresh on a short rest. Not balanced.
And then you’ve added a partial ASI on top of that. Not balanced.
Perhaps something more like this:
Elven Sharpshooter
Prerequisite: Requires the Archery fighting style and the Elven Accuracy feat
Your elven heritage grants you unmatched skills in the art of archery. If you made an attack with a bow and the total attack roll is 30 or higher, you can spend your reaction to make an additional attack using the same weapon. You can use this feat a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all uses whenever you finish a long rest.
Or perhaps….
Your elven heritage grants you unmatched skills in the art of archery. You gain the following:
Increase your Dexterity or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
If you made an attack with a bow and the attack is a critical hit, you can spend your reaction to make an additional attack using the same weapon. You can use this feat a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all uses whenever you finish a long rest.
I agree... what this feat really needs to keep it from being unbalanced is some interaction with the Action Economy to keep it from being too unbalanced.
For Sposta's suggested fixes... I think if you go for the version where it only triggers on a crit, I'm not sure if you need to put the limited uses into it. Crits are already unreliable as a resource to build your class around, and even if you get multiple crits in the same turn you still only have one reaction to spend on that additional attack. I think the obvious comparison is Great Weapon Master, which grants a bonus action attack on a crit or if you knock a creature to zero... I feel like a Reaction is already a more precious resource to spend on something like this (maybe some people will disagree and consider your bonus action more valuable), so it doesn't really need to also have a limited number of uses per day.
So would you say it'd be a good idea to change the one additional attack to when you knock a creature to zero or score a critical hit? It'd still use reaction as Sposta suggested? Although this could be the wrong way to think about a feat for my character as I already have 8 attacks at 20th level which is what we are going to.
Well, i have base 3 attacks from fighter, plus an additional attack on the first round of combat if im first in the initiative bonus, then I action surge for 8 attack but only on my first turn in combat.

Oh, I didn't realize the mistakes with this build, thank you very much for pointing them out and explaining it to me!
How do you have 8 attacks @ 20th level?!?
