I'm going to have my players in court room situation and they need to talk to a public defender. They're going to be in a interview room to speak with their lawyer, but there are guards standing closely by the door. I needed something to allow my player's to speak freely without anyone overhearing their conversion. So I come up with the Confidential Orb. Why a orb? Because orbs are cool. I also thought it'll give players a unique item to mess around with. A rounded object that has to be placed on a flat surface to work. Maybe they can move the orb away from a flat surface or use mage hand to pick it up without anyone realizing it. Now the conversion is no longer private. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts and suggestions. Thanks.
It seems fine, except for the thunder and psychic immunity. Consider that, when in a fight with a mind flayer or similar psionic enemy, a player could drop the orb for seemingly no action and make a 20-foot radius of complete immunity to the monster's most powerful effects.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

I could make the radius smaller and not have it so big. I like the encounter that you mentioned. I can picture a group of players huddled around the orb together, kicking it across the floor to flee from a bunch of mind flayers that are chasing them.
I'd make it so that the thunder and psychic immunity only works if the origin of the damage is outside while the target is inside, or vice versa. Otherwise, you'd be immune to thunder damage even when you can hear it perfectly fine, which wouldn't make much sense. I'd also prevent telepathy and similar forms of communication through the border of the area, to pair with the psychic immunity.
