I am trying to create an Item for a monk in my game. But I'm having a hard time using the homebrew item creator. Is there a way to do reverse charges? the item I am trying to create starts with 0 charges and gains charges as the PC lands unarmed strikes. I would to add tick boxes to the item listing as he "fills" up the charges. I am also unsure what to use as a base for this item. Initially I went from scratch, but doing that, the item bonuses were not showing up on the character sheet (attacks section -> unarmed strikes). additionally is there a way to use Monk Unarmed strikes as a base for the item? I did notice I could set the item type to weapon, allowing me to pick a weapon as the base, but unarmed strikes aren't in that list.
Hand wraps of lightning
Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement by a Monk)
These simple strips of cloth have bolts of lightning made of silvery thread woven though them. They are meant to be wrapped around a person's hands or feet. When attuned, and worn the hand wraps grant the following bonuses:
+1 to attack and damage with Unarmed strikes
Every successful unarmed strike grants +1 charge, the wraps may only store up to 5 charges
As an action you may expend 5 charges to cast the spell shocking grasp
You specify the maximum amount of charges and it begins with those charges. You can give it a recharge period of 1 charge for every successful unarmed attack and require characters to begin with 0 charges. Instead of making it a weapon, make it a wondrous item.

I cant answer your question about the item charge up mechanic, but I will say requiring at least two turns to charge up for a cantrip is a bit too much work for too little gain. I get that its charging passively, and the mechanical idea itself is awesome, but shocking grasp generally wont do twice as much damage as the two attacks a Monk will normally make. Instead how about having it cast shocking grasp in the same manner as the cantrip Green Flame Blade? Make an attack, and if the attack connects then deal bonus damage as if you had hit with shocking grasp. I would also say just have the charges remain until the attack actually connects, so your player isn't potentially robbed of something they have been anticipating because of a bad dice roll.
