How would you add the ability to use Kensei Weapons to a monk subclass the same way as the original UA version? Is there a modifier to make Martial Weapons monk weapons, and another to choose specific weapons to become monk weapons?
There is a Kensei modifier type but it seems to be really badly bugged for (or not intended for use in) homebrew; the only way I've found to actually use it is to copy the Way of the Kensei sub-class and modify that. If you try to add the Kensei modifier to your own homebrew it either won't appear at all, or you won't be able to choose the sub-type, either way it doesn't seem to be possible to just add it as with other similar effects.
Of course, copying that sub-class means you also can't change it a great deal, i.e- you can't expand it to three or four weapons, and you can't change the types of weapons you can select, you're still subject to the same limitations as the Xanathar's Guide Way of the Kensei.
It's always disappointing to find that a feature has been implemented exactly as written only; I wish D&D Beyond would add new features in a more modular way, i.e- let us pick the weapon list etc., as it would add so much more value to the toolset.
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

Could you work around it with a 'magical weapon' that adds monk properties to it?
I put in a request for those modifier subtypes to be added a while ago and they thought it was a good idea at that time. We might be lucky and they’ll incorporate it into the new system they are building. 🤷♂️
