Hi, pretty soon I’m going to be running my first modern fantasy campaign, which is a sandbox world set in the 1980s, all about kids going on a cross-country road trip.
Ive made a lot of the world and lore already, but I’m having trouble finding resources that work with it well. The main things I’ve been looking for are maps (for roll20) and idea lists for random encounters (combat and non-combat). Does anyone know of good places to find stuff like these?
Also if anyone else has more tips on how to run sandbox/travel-based or modern fantasy campaigns, any feedback would be appreciated!!! Ty! 🥰🥰
If it’s set in the real world, Google maps for the actual area circa 1980 and use those. One of the coolest things about playing in a modern IRL setting like that is being able to say “I recognize that place! Remember that time we fought the [whatever] and saved the Mayor’s husband? It was right over there.”

I think that you could use regular (non-modern) encounters and place them in the modern world.
For, example, in Percy Jackson, they encountered a medusa in one of those places you buy yard statues. Or a Las Vegas casino was a place where people were controlled by cursed lotus flowers.
You could have a lot of monsters that don't appear to be monsters to regular people. (They could look like people, or animals, or bugs, or statues.) Likewise, you could have certain locales that are totally different on the inside.
I would read or watch the Percy Jackson stuff or other modern fantasy to get inspiration on how to do this. In the Fablehaven series, characters would have to drink special milk each day to perceive the fantasy world.
Alternatively, you could go Harry Potter (or Men in Black) style. Regular people can see magical things, but there's an organization hiding it from them, or making them forget when they do.
