Starting at level 2 they already have more attacks with Flurry of Blows (three attacks compared to a fighter’s two with fighting with two weapons). At level 5 they have 4 attacks with FoB. Now that is resource dependent but without FoB they are equal to fighters, if both use their bonus action to attack with two weapons or unarmed. Fighters only pull ahead at 11th level TWF once the monks Ki is out. And fighters need the TWF style to add their ability score to the BA attack where monks don’t.
Basically, monks and fighters can make the same number of attacks all day long up to 11th level. Then fighters pull ahead. But using resources, the monk does more attacks until then.
I’m not saying monks shouldn’t be able to do quick strikes but I don’t necessarily think they need more than fighters as extra attack and more feats are the fighters thing. Where monks have other options like stunning strike etc.
It does look like monks are getting a boost later this year with the new PHB
I just wonder if giving more attacks and not scaling the MA die would be as beneficial. And would it slow down combat. How many attacks would be necessary? Would these extra attacks include monk weapons? And if so, if the weapons do better damage (spear/quarterstaff) would that disincentivize unarmed monks?

The fantasy i would like to play is Donnie Yen in Ip Man. However they can design that, i am up for it. (Maybe its a subclass?) Monks are decent in tier 1 and 2 but their damage drops off the map in tier 3 and 4. So any additional unarmed strikes could be added at level 11 and 17. In general i would like to see the monks bonus action unarmed strike moved to the attack action so they start off with two attacks on the attack action. I would also like to see any unarmed strikes added through FOB also moved to the attack action. Although what they did in the UA is much better than the current monk i think that bonus action is still way too clogged up. Bringing all their attacks to the attack action improves the monks action economy dramatically. Now that i think about it, maybe once the monks action economy is improved then maybe things like number of attacks or martial arts die scaling would no longer be issues.
I hear you about slowing down game play. Thats part of a larger issue though. Most of my play time is tier 3 and 4 and combat is always slow at these levels. An extra punch or two from a monk wont make much difference.

I agree the MA die should be higher (for flurries of blow) like # PB x per day, can substitute a MA die to 2d10 or something in that order. Or scale it by level (say at higher levels die changes to d12 and max out at d20 at 18th level plus. I don't think more attacks is the answer (but the damage die or MA die) would be a better change.

so monks should (as it is ) do less damage but do it faster and more often. Basically i think monks should have these extra attaks that fighter has
i don't think that fighter should loose all extra attaks but rather have less
what do you think?

yes. agreed. they start off ok but rely too much on the martial arts die for scaling of damage when it should be more extra unarmed strikes.

I think they need to buff the ma die still . you can get so many add ons to normal weapons but not nearly as much for unarmed attacks
