Dwarves are cool though I have never played one. I really want to though. I have DMed a one-shot inside a dwarven citadel and it was really fun.
When Tolkien was planning Middle-earth, he had to decide between making the plural of the word dwarf, dwarfs, dwarves, or dwarrow. I personally really like dwarrow but he chose dwarves I think.
If you want cool dwarf lore, read Terry Pratchett. He created a lot of lore for them and built a complex culture for dwarves that was based around mining, dwelling underground, carrying axes, and having beards. My name and profile picture is the mine sign of a quasi-demonic, immortal, dwarven, spirit of darkness and revenge that plays a part in his stories.
Also, it is a rule in all my campaigns that female dwarves have beards.
I did find it interesting that Tolkien did that, the former grammar was dwarfs, but he changed it. I think i will look into Terry Pratchett, and as for that rule, in mine, all hill dwarves have beards, but only male mountain dwarves.

Cool. Is there a reason only male mountain dwarves have beards, or did you just do that so that not all female dwarves need to be bearded. If I used that rule, I would swap it. I would say female hill dwarves don't have beards, but all mountain dwarves do. That is because I think of hill dwarves as being more interactive with other peoples. Mountain dwarves are more solitary and rarely seen by other humanoids and so they are considered more strange and there are probably weird rumors about them. Also what about duergar, do they all have beards?
Terry Pratchett had the rule of bearded dwarf women. The group who I play Dnd with all freaked out when there was that bearded dwarf woman reference in Rings of Power. They used it as proof that bearded dwarf women are canon in middle-earth. All except one who was just slightly confused as to why we all feel so strongly that dwarf women should have beards.

Well, i play the forgotten realms most, where gold dwarves (hill dwarves) were the first, so i feel that they should have beards, and shield dwarves migrated. So, a genetic mutation.
What's your opinion, hill dwarves or mountain dwarves?
I would play a hill dwarf when I want to play a dwarf who has interacted regularly with other humanoids. If I was playing a dwarf that was a merchant, or had some other job or reason to be among non dwarven society, I use hill dwarves.
I would play a mountain dwarf if I wanted to play a dwarf who had never or rarely left their stronghold. If I wanted my dwarf to be one of the dwarves who followed the old traditions and was never seen without my armor, than I would play a mountain dwarf.
I usually play hill dwarves as designated traders or warriors, and mountain dwarves as the ones who lost their home or were otherwise removed from their clan by external forces.

I don’t like the idea that female dwarves have to have beards, but if you’re playing a female dwarf and you want her to have a beard that’s cool with me.

I really like D&D, especially Ravenloft, Exandria and the Upside Down from Stranger Things. My pronouns are she/they (genderfae).
I still don’t think it should be something that all female dwarves have to deal with. I think you should be able to choose whether your character grows facial hair or not. But if your players are good with it that’s fine too.

If we have a player playing a female dwarf and they don't want to have a beard, then they don't have to have a beard. It is their character, and they get to make them however they want. I will probably always have bearded dwarf women in my worlds because I think it is a fun thing to include, but other players don't have to play that way and it is mostly just a joke.

I agree, you could always play whatever character you want.

How do you think the Dwarvish language sounds? I personally think it would probably be like, deep, but not very smooth.
I normally imagine it sounding similar to either a Scottish accent or the Russian language. I also think it probably has a lot of guttural sounds, and I might style some of the words off of Hebrew because it is a cool language.
I also have a friend who has styled dwarves to be based off Arabian cultures, so them having a language similar to Arabic would be cool and make sense in that setting.
Also the Nomadic people groups of Central Asia have cool sounding words, and I like the idea of Dwarves living in yurts. Though, actually in my world Gnomes are nomadic goatherds that live in yurts and can control mist. They are called the Gnomads.
I also like the idea of having a clan of dwarves that live at sea, similar to the Polynesian people.
Another thing related to dwarvish communication, deep rothe are said to communicate simple with each other by naturally casting dancing lights. I like the idea of dwarven deep rothe herders guiding and commanding the beasts with the cantrip, and maybe that form of communication has developed to the point where dwarves can communicate with each other silently and long distance using dancing lights, altering the shape, pattern, brightness, and color of the lights to convey meaning.
Terry Pratchett has a thing called Mine Signs in his books about dwarves. They are symbols the dwarves draw or carve into walls while mining to give directions, information, and warnings. However, they aren't always used to communicate, some Mine Signs, like my profile name and picture, are used to summon creatures of darkness. When they are summoned, it is usually by dwarves who have gone mad from spending some much time working hard in pitch darkness.
I cast resurrection.

Sure, I'll join.
I have no idea why my last post looked weird and it won't let me edit it.

Maybe the hill dwarf was kicked out of the clan as a suspected (or real) traitor.

Yes, it could be that only some dwarves grow beards, so you could choose dwarf to dwarf.
