Welcome, my fellow lovers of lore! Do you give your characters names with carefully hidden secret messages about their personality inside of those names? Do you overthink every aspect of their backstory? Do you like adventure? Activity? Wonder? Danger? Horror? Pain? Suffering? Agony? Death? Disease? Death?
…
Then come join this thread, post about your characters, and bring creative joy to the lives of others!

My old account, Gamer_Thirteen, is no longer accessible to me, so here I am.
”A young man stands in his bedroom. It just so happens that today, the 13th of April, is this young man's birthday. Though it was thirteen years ago he was given life, it is only today he will be given a name!”
Whip Spider of the Spider Guild. (Technically whip spiders are scorpions but that’s Vulkoor’s job, not mine)
All of my characters are feminine in personality and looks, but they aren’t all female. I have a couple femboys, an intersex woman and a shapeshifter who prefers their feminine form.
Well, with my characters I try to focus more on their role in the party and specifically start with what their quote-on-quote "gimmick" is, or the general theme of their character. And, well, I have a very bad habit of giving most of them bad puns as names or complex, Germanic or Russian last names.
I find it enjoyable when a character defies the stereotype of their character role in a negative way. For example, a cleric who wishes that their "test subjects" weren't killed, rather than their "patients" or "friends".

For me I make characters who don't really have a big tremendous backstory but rather a simple one that just gives them room to grow and completely create who they truly are.

Lore, Lore, and More! That's what I'm about!
PM me if you wish for some lore on a person or place!
Here's a backstory I have for one of my PC's, Oberon.
As a child, Oberon was a normal human boy, raised to a mother who loved and cherished him for all of the accomplishments he made throughout his youth, like his adeptness on the Viol. Speaking of the Viol, Oberon has always loved music. As a matter of fact, it's been a great source of joy for him for many, many years. The order of the instruments in harmony, the way they all work together... it's all simply beautiful to behold. He loved it so much that he went to great measures to make sure he could truly understand the beauty of it... to which he turned to the powers of a hag in order to grant him his wishes. He knew that hags were malicious creatures, but he was foolish to believe that all would be right in his escapade.
"So, you wish to understand the notes, eh sonny?"
Without a second thought, he responded. "Indeed, miss."
"Alright... how's this for a bargain. I let you hyperfixate on yer little hobby... and I take something in return. Even-Steven!"
"I do understand. Please, take anything that you must."
And from that moment on, he was cursed, both his eyes and nose removed and a hideous nothic-esque eye splitting open on his face. It was disgusting to behold, but such is the nature of the fey, cruel tricksters. Now with only a single eye, he supposed the hag never lied to him. After all, he's only able to focus on one thing now with that eye of his. After the procedure, he want back to his hometown wearing a strange new getup... especially with a newfound mask. After the dreaded day, he was still leading a rather successful life much to the dismay of the hag, accepted into a bardic college of creation to achieve his dream, even writing a few pieces of his own for orchestra performances. But who knows... the fey could still be lurking out there.
I must also comment, Oberon’s story is hardcore. I respect the heck out of roleplayers who can take a flaw, a curse, or a hindrance and fully embrace it. Well done.
I usually try to design characters with a basic backstory I can both explain briefly and easily link up to the backstories of other characters. After all, myself and other players need a reason why we’d adventure together.
Darbakh is a Duergar exiled from the Underdark, like most of his kind likely to travel with other characters. He’s a scoundrel at heart and always down for looting and pillaging.
Quorian is a half-elf paladin who lived a full civilian life for half a century and has moved on. He’s a do-gooder at heart and always down for helping others achieve their aims.
I often expand beyond the basic backstory through fanfiction, but none of that affects adventures played with others, nor is it something which needs to be mentioned in casual conversation.

Most of my characters are female (cisgender or otherwise), though I've played a few that are nonbinary, agender, or animated objects or robots that don't even know what a gender is. I often (consciously or otherwise) design my characters' personality/backstory in a way that fits 1 of 3 categories:
Strategical and calculated tacticians that always keep a level head and are always drinking some variety of caffeinated beverage.
Cheery and optimistic little cinnamon rolls that think everyone is their friend until proven otherwise.
Snarky and sarcastic characters that try to act all edgy and such, but are actually big softies with hearts of gold.
Hmmm... I'm beginning to sense a pattern...

I have a wide variety of characters, but most of my PCs (as opposed to NPCs) are based at least partially on an aspect of myself. Like myself in another universe where my genetic makeup might be subtly different and the environment might be vastly divergent, leading to a very different but fundamentally similar personality for each character.

I really like D&D, especially Ravenloft, Exandria and the Upside Down from Stranger Things. My pronouns are she/they (genderfae).
I just thought up the stupidest build that works mechanically... and by God, it's beautiful.
The "Rocket Jumping" build (Zeal Cleric 6, Storm Sorcerer 6, Glory Paladin 7). It takes advamtage of Storm Sorcerer's Tempestuous Magic and Zeal's Resounding Strike in order to get serious height (About 40 feet!) with the use of the Thunderwave spell. Though the build works mechanically, it likely needs DM assistance in order to give self-disadvantage and allow you to intentionally hit yourself with the spell.
