Manhattan; December, 1934. The Great Depression hit us hard, harder than most. Times are rough right now, leading to a lot of chaos and confusion. Trouble is all about, as robbers, smugglers, and anarchists run amuk, destroying all we hold dear. Of course, us detectives are trying to stop them, but corruption can spread: even in the ever vigilant Charley & Co. agency. Alas, there, too, are the Vile Ones. Their one goal is to spread death and fear throughout Manhattan, in an epic power move for the decades. It is our job to stop them.
Welcome to the 12th mafia game! It should be a fun one, with all sorts of fun roles. I'll put emphasis on the neutral roles this time, because after all, the world isn't always so black and white. *Winks*
ROLES:
TOWN (Good Guys/City)
Slum-Dweller: Normal people, nothing special.
City-Dweller: Also normal people, nothing special.
Detective: Part of the Charley & Co. Agency; can investigate a player to discern their alignment.
Vigilante: Stole some weapons from a gun store and now thinks he's a pro with them. Can decide to try to kill someone at night; 75% chance of working. If they kill a Town member, then they decide to give up the weapons.
Veteran: Can choose to Ready, and anyone who visits the player that night has a 75% chance of dying. Can only take this action 3 times.
Jailer: Can choose to cancel a player's role for the night; 75% chance of working.
NEUTRAL (Weird Guys)
Burglar: Can rob people of their belongings, delivering them to the Smuggler. Each night, can choose to rob someone, which usually has no ill effects. However, if the Vigilante or Veteran are robbed, then they become Slum-Dwellers or City-Dwellers. Wins on the same conditions that Smuggler wins, except if the Smuggler survives till the end.
Smuggler: Can deliver illicit goods to his contacts in the Vile Ones. Works with the Burglar to gain more power. Each night, the Smuggler can give one person his supplies, giving them the ability to reduce the chance of being imprisoned or killed by the Vigilante/Veteran/Jailer to 50%. As long as the Burglar robs people, the Smuggler can do his night action. The Smuggler wins if he and the Burglar survive to the end, or if he survives without getting investigated by the Detective.
Arsonist: Can destroy anything and everything he wants with his flamethrower, gasoline, and matches. Each night, he can decide to burn down the home of a player. That player cannot take night actions that night. If the arsonist burns down every remaining player's house, he wins.
Anarchist: A total nihilist. Every night, can induct a player into his cause. If the anarchist inducts every remaining player into his cause, then he wins.
MAFIA (Bad Guys/Vile Ones):
Mob Boss: The big boss of the mafia. If he dies, then he takes another mafia member to the grave with him. Eligible for the night's kill.
Mafia Goon: The simple-minded goon. Eligible for the night's kill.
Spy: A criminal contact. Instead of taking the night's kill, can choose to spy on one member. This reveals whether they have a weapon (Veteran, Vigilante) have police items (Jailer, Detective, City-Dweller), has criminal items (Smuggler, Burglar, or Arsonist) or has nothing (Anarchist, Slum-Dweller). Also reveals whether they are at their house or not during the night.
GAME RULES (Stolen from PJ's game, which were stolen from Gibber's game):
Mafia on here starts with a simple process.
1. Make a sign up thread, and wait for enough people to join. What I'm doing here.
2. The game starts. Different roles will be assigned to different people. This can be a Town Role, Mafia Role, or Neutral Role. The different roles are in the Roles Section if you want to see what they are.
3. People are PM'ed their roles and the game thread is made. The game starts. :D
Then the actual game is split into two periods: Day and Night.
Day: People can discuss who they think mafia is and vote for who they think is the most suspicious. You can vote someone by saying: VOTE: PERSON or choose against it by saying VOTE: SKIP VOTE. The one with the most votes dies, and their role will be revealed. Day lasts 48 IRL hours (or more if I'm busy or purposefully extend it), and then it goes to night.
Night: This is when the regular townsfolk sleep and those with special roles do their stuff. Everything during night is done in PMs for secrecy, and people don't discuss the game in the main thread (you can goof around, just don't say stuff like who you're sus of). Night lasts 24 IRL hours (or more if I'm busy or purposefully extending it), and then it goes back to day and I'll reveal the results of the actions (whether it be in PM or the main thread).
Day and Night may last shorter then expected if everyone has voted for day or done their actions for night. This goes on in an endless cycle until a win goal is met.
Mafia: Have there be an amount of non-mafia equal to the amount of mafia, since they can't be voted out then and are free to slaughter.
Townsfolk: Eliminate all of the mafia and free your town of evil!
Neutral: Each neutral role has their own goal that they're working towards. They work with neither mafia nor the town.
After the condition for winning is met, they win!!! Truly the plot twist of all time.
GENERAL RULES:
Don't get too heated or upset, it is a game. Be respectful.
Ghosts will be added to a Graveyard PM, they cannot talk during the day and can only goof around during the night, especially because if they choose so they can get a list of everyone and their roles in their Graveyard PM.
No PM sharing. You can say, "I'm town." but that doesn't prove you are, showing a PM screenshot is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
Put "Noir" or "Black and White" in your first post to show you read these instructions.
Ask for clarification if you need it, better then making a lot of mistakes
If you want to join after the game has already started you'll be put in a queue of replacements if someone cant stay in the game
No talking outside of the game thread unless its clearly stated its okay, like in the Mafia group chat for the Night
Alright, that's it for the rules. Tell me if something is unbalanced. I'm looking to have 2-3 Mafia, 1-2 Neutral, and the rest Town roles. I'll start once we have 12+ players.
Why would you give stuff a chance of just not working? And what’s the point of having 2 regular townies with no differences. The Mob Boss is just unnecessary. Then a role having an ability to permanently remove a player’s ability is just unfun

Yo, I'm Himy (He/him) not as active as I use to be, but I'm here from time to time. I don't got much else to say.
"Like a soon to be broken man once said: You're either perfect, or you're not me."
To Himy: I believe it makes it more realistic, and I want a more grittier, darker mafia game. I'll probably change the odds, though. Also, the people with removable roles actually can get their roles revoked anyway, assuming they do specific things. Actually, I'll remove the Arsonist part. He can't get his role revoked.
To Panda: If you don't have anything planned for the next, I don't know, say, 2 weeks, you can be active on here. Why would I restrict you from joining, anyways?

I don’t see what part of the changes make it more realistic or gritty. It just makes the game tedious. Also, you need to specify those kinds of things. Make it clear what they have to do to get the roles back.

I'm in (cool Noir theme), but I do want to say this isn't really balanced for the town. A general rule I used is 1 non-town in every 3 people. If we're only considering mafia as non-town then this works, but when neutral roles are taken into consideration then only about half of the total players are town, which isn't good. (For context, with 3 mafia and 2 neutrals, after a mislynch and a kill it's impossible to get a vote that aligns purely with the town's interests, and with 4 mafia and 3 neutrals the town can't get a vote aligning with them at all and lose after one single mislynch or skip and kill.)

This was my fear too, so I added Mob Boss. Alright, so, would 3 mafia w/ Mob Boss and 1 Neutral work, or 2 Mafia and 2 Neutral work?

They aren't able to get their roles back. Vigilante and Veteran have never been able to get their roles back, right? Once Vigilante kills a Town, then they lose their role. If Veteran Readies three times, they lose their role. I decided having a role that has a chance of removing it early wouldn't be game-breaking.
Although, maybe I should give them a way to get their roles back. Perhaps if the Smuggler gives them the goods?

I'm not sure I follow.
Burglar: Can rob people of their belongings, delivering them to the Smuggler. Each night, can choose to rob someone, which usually has no ill effects. However, if the Vigilante or Veteran are robbed, then they become Slum-Dwellers or City-Dwellers. Wins if the Smuggler wins.
According to that sentence, if the burglar robs one of those roles, they become completely normal. In my opinion, that isn’t very fun.

im assuming I cant join because I pretty much vanished last game and dont have the password.
You can join, if you read the rules VERY closely. Like I said with Pandalv, the last game had (no offense to PJ) really poor timing. I'm trying to avoid that this time, and making it before too many people take vacations. Also, I sort of disappeared at the end (although, technically, I had died. BUT STILL) so I can't really be talking.

read the rules closely
You can join, if you read the rules VERY closely. Like I said with Pandalv, the last game had (no offense to PJ) really poor timing. I'm trying to avoid that this time, and making it before too many people take vacations. Also, I sort of disappeared at the end (although, technically, I had died. BUT STILL) so I can't really be talking.
