Agreed that Grief/Thoughtborn are decent names and fit.
Somewhat thinking of La Llorona in a sense. (Grief-stricker ghost mother that steals and drowns other kids to replace hers.)'
Perhaps Tearmaiden/Tearmaster as a possibility.
Well thats sufficiently awesome and terrifying
:P is La Llorona french?
No. Mexican folklore.
now I wonder if the usa has any folklore
Try looking at native Americans folklore. We also have stuff like moth man, Bigfoot and the like
How dare you not mention wendigo my beloved
Honestly forgot he existed. North American folklore ain’t really my thing. Other than the Maya and Aztecs
I love how silly a lot of the cryptids are in (non-native) american folklore, some of my favorites because they're utterly ridiculous
I like the creepiness aspects of Wendigos and Skinwalkers. First introduction to the wendigo was via the show GRIMM which had an episode with them as the antagonists. I know there's hesitancy from people of the Algonquin/Navajo tribes to speak of Wendigos/Skinwalkers but kinda want to look into them more with the stories (and maybe learn some more Native American folklores) some time.
For the non-Amerindian folklore I'm reminded of the show Mountain Monsters which was utterly ridiculous. :D You'd learn a little of the folklore. And then they'd have a crazy night of almost capturing the cryptid which would narrowly escape. First time I saw an episode of the show I went in thinking it would be like Finding Bigfoot or similar things only to be like, "Nope. They are delightfully cray-cray." Though it was a bummer once I (quickly) realized their stuff was extremely staged. (I enjoy a show that tries to search for things, but on the flip side my favorite of the Finding Bigfoot cast was the skeptical one.)
@Gib Gibnot sure yet, but I might be interested in a Mafia game. (I'll see how things are. Just came back from being away for a while, so wanting to see how consistent I am.)
On the topic of cryptids, one of the things I love about D&D is that the monsters and curses townsfolk are afraid of in D&D are actually real, in D&D if there's a spooky story about a monster its more likely to be a real threat than fake
Not sure if I'm explaining that well, but hopefully it makes sense. (And most TTRPGs, I just said D&D cause its the face of the hobby)
Perhaps he was inspired down this path because this philosopher of yours was sent a mentally scarring vision of an eldritch angel of a god of virtue?
