((so this is basically a not-campaign for you to DM, so you can get better at DMing? can I join?))
You can indeed join, and if you would like to take a shot at DMing then let me know and I'll direct the adventurers your way!
the current premise is that they are trapped in a series of generally deadly rooms, where they face puzzles and trials to solve. each room completed gets them back to the waiting room, where stand the various doors, completed ones emblazoned wit ha flaming "X" of red or green, depending on how well they were completed.
It's very informal - I'm treating all stats as 10, and things tend to either "hurt a bit", "hurt a lot" or "kill". I give people logical bonuses for their characters (EG an artificer is good at working out how things work, a ranger might know plants, that sort of thing).
Let me know what you want to do - feel free to drop in as a player for the last of this room if you want to DM the next one!
I'll be a PC for now. I have 2 questions though:
1. in a play by post, your kinda committed, and have to stick to the end. with this, can I just stop posting at any time?
2. was the original purpose of this thread to be something very informal to get better DMing? that's what it seems like from the name of the thread.

Yes to both questions. You can drop in & out as you like (I keep ethereal floaty-people following the group around narratively to represent those who stopped posting but can reappear at any time).
The goal was to flex the DMing muscles, try it out and get more used to improv, not so much for the nitty-gritty of the rules (which requires characters, rests, and commitment).

The original purpose of the thread was to replace the You Are In A Room thread, and the idea for a training ground evolved from there
And yeah, you can. Bail at any point, though a bit of warning would be nice.
ok, my character is a halfling knight named Caldri Uppos. although not super gifted with sword play, he is always jaunty, will take on any challenge, and will never brake the code of chivalry.
"good day to you, good sirs and ladies!" a short man, standing about 4' 6" says cheerily, striding into the room. clad in chain mail, he looks to be a stereotypical knight, other than being 4 and a half feet tall. he has green eyes, an athletic build, and a friendly, kindly look about him. his armor is in pristine condition, polished and cleaned.
"onward! we shall complete our quest, defeating the forces of evil, or die valiantly in the charge!" he shouts, brandishing a short blade.
“Oh. That guy. Wondering when that guy was gonna show up. Well, you can make yourself useful, here, you’re a knight right? Figure this one out.” Says SSSSSTTTTTTEEEEEEELLLLLAAAAAAA handing the new guy the book.
Before you is a throne, in which there sits, slumped, a suit of armour containing a skeleton. Sticking out of the suit of armour are 12 swords, each with a different coloured gauntlet grasping the handle. The skeleton is wearing a crown. His shield leans against the side of the throne, and in one hand, on his lap, is held a small book.
Looking around, you are in a large, cold, flag-stoned chamber. Moth-eaten tapestries line the walls, the holes showing the stones behind them. As you look behind you, you see 12 figures stood stock still in painted armour, and behind them, the only door. Each figure is missing one gauntlet, and you see that their hands are naught but bones.
The book is a children's rhyme, which reads:
"A Dozen Knights on a Dozen Horse Rode to Challenge the King by Force! The Red Knight, The Grey, and the Green Knight struck True So too did the Orange, the Yellow, and Blue! The King bore his Arms to Defend this Attack and took Impalement from Front, as well as from Back! For the Pink Knight, the White Knight, the Black and the Beige With the Brown and the Burgundy, Murdered their Leige! These 12 slew their King for the sake of the Town, But which, do you think, Should now wear the Crown?"
Jerry and Stella have determined that the word "Impalement" is in fact a reference to the combination of coats of arms, typically through marriage, where the coat of arms is split in half; the males side on the left, the females side on the right (bolded because it's extra info which might have been missed).
Hunter has established that you are probably supposed to take the crown and give it to the correct knight, who should have it.
You look around the room and the shields are as follows:
The King: A lion, looking right, on a red background.
Red: 5 black feathers on a pink background Grey: an eye on a green background Green: A Green dragon on an orange background Orange: A Stag looking left on a brown background Yellow: A pickaxe and a snake, on a yellow and blue split background Blue: 3 dogs looking left on a yellow background Pink: a lion looking left on a Blue background White: an Eagle, looking right, on a white background Black: a white unicorn looking right on a purple background Beige: A Griffin looking right on a red & white split background Brown: a star beside a mace, on a white & blue split background. Burgundy: Two maces on a blue background.
Stella started trying to break the crown but stopped when all of the skeleton knights and the king turned to stare at him.

nice arm you got there... be a shame if someone were to *BANG*
'course I can, does everyone want to see this one through or do you want to fast-track back to the waiting room?
as far as I can tell it's currently Fitz, Mcshootyou, Plopped and Diana who are most active so I'll hold fire on this and see what you all think!

by Jove you did and all!
Odd that you're rolling 4d6, rerolling one, and dropping the lowest, usually it's just a D20 for a roll ;)
You make your moving speech to the skeletons, but they stand impassively, as undead guardians so often do.
