I have a question. Can you use Divine smite with, say a wizard's spell slots if you multiclass from Paladin to Wizard? Say 2 levels Pal to get Divine smite then the rest Wizard and use Wizard slots to Divine smite?
"Paladin spell slots" and "Wizard spell slots" aren't really a thing. When you have more than one class with Spellcasting, your spell slots are not associated with a specific class; you have a single pool of spell slots based on your character level, and you can use them to cast spells from any of your classes. This is explained in detail here.
The bottom line is: you are not limited in which specific spell slots you can use to cast Divine Smite (or any other spell).
Also worth noting that 2024 Paladins can actually prepare Divine Smite as early as level 1. The level 2 feature grants it as an "always prepared" spell and gives you a free casting of it once per long rest, but it's still a level 1 spell that you can prepare at class level 1.
