I'm playing a wizard and am now at level 8. I have access to the secret chest spell but can't come close to affording the component cost. If my entire party of four chipped in all our gold we might be able to afford the components. Am I missing something or is this supposed to be too expensive for my level 8 wizard?
Yes. It encourages you to go out and adventure more to get the funds to make it.
I think this is what I'm missing . The only way that I could get to level eight was buy going out and killing shit, rescuing idiots, and surviving . So if I've done enough to get enough experience to make it to level eight should I have made enough to afford the spells I obtain at that level? I'm not spending money on magic items or healing spells .
True, but the 1st level spell Identify requires a 100gp value Pearl and most low level adventurers don't really have the funds to be casting that left and right either. Same with Chromatic Orb, which requires a 50 gp value Diamond.
The wizard is always starved for gold. Or, more appropriately, will always have need for more gold. :p
I mean, you can technically write all spells on your list in your spellbook(s). This kind of freedom usually demands some kind of price, and the standard of "time and money" as a speed bump or balancing factor is well tested.
All in all, I just think it means you need to prioritize. Personally, I'm glad that material components aren't consumed anymore (most of the time, anyway).
Although, in the case of Leomund's Secret Chest, you can still lose the gold if you're not careful and you let the spell end. But at least it can't be dispelled, so you just need to worry about putting a reminder on your calendar (and keeping the small chest safe). :p
I did spend money so I could copy one spell scroll that was found. It just seemed to me that since I a wizard doesn't seem to be able to acquire that much gold by the time they can access that level of spell then why isn't it a higher level spell. This way you can afford it by the time you can access it. In all it is what it is, I'm just musing.

Those two spells don't consume their respective gems, so it's only an initial investment required. One you've got the pearl/diamond, either by finding or buying one, you can cast left and right to your heart's content. The Secret Chest costs 5050gp per chest - though each chest can last forever if taken care of.
If you are looking to access the spell then have a chat with your DM. I wouldn't want to make my players grind goblins just to access a spell. Perhaps the local dwarven bank can arrange a loan in exchange for future services. Maybe a jeweller will trade you a chest for some treasured magic item. Perhaps someone can arrange a quest for you to obtain a suitable chest from some known location, then you'd only need to buy the replica. Either way, as a DM I would be making sure there was a significant cost involved - just not in pure gold on character sheet terms.

Good point. Well only another 4k to go.
