im curious as to wether a certain player (a rouge) with two immovable rods, boots of haste, and a cloak of the arachnid can use them in tandem to create what is essentially an infinite ladder/monkey bars, allowing for unhindered 3-D movement.
Yes, that would work. However, I think in most instances chances of a single character obtaining those items are very slim. I'm guessing any item that gives a fly speed or access to the levitate spell would work a lot better.
I do not think it will work for an extended period. First, the two immovable rods will need to be activated and inactivated each time one wanted to move it. So, the cloak would give him the ability to ensure he doesn't fall off, but he would either need to balance on top of one rod, while re positioning the other, or hang off one rod by his feet to re position the other (quite the ab strength to do that). Or, he's holding them by his hands, and basically doing endless chinups. In either case, no matter how fit someone is, he would expend way too much energy for this to be practical.
However, if my players happened to have these items, and wanted to do exactly this, I would allow it with a couple of athletics checks.
I would LOVE to have one of my characters get an Immovable Rod! Two would be ten times better, not twice as good!!
I agree, two Immovable Rods would let any character with a high athletics score go almost anywhere without too much of a challenge even without the other items on your list. Plus they can be used to aid in ambushes, to block doors closed or open, or even as anchors for ships or "stops" to keep wagons from rolling away. Their only limitation is your imagination!
Would definitely work. It is probably pretty difficult to do this fast though (imagine yourself trying to do this, you'd likely fail at some point if you tried to rush it). Even with Cloak of the Arachnida, gravity is still a thing, so I think an acrobatics roll with an easy DC and/or advantage is fitting for this.
A single immovable rod, given a character with infinite CON/STR, should be enough to serve as an infinite ladder, working the same way a salmon ladder does.
In an actual game I'd the user to make a high-DC Athletics check to use it this way, but it could be done.

Two Immovable Rods make a perfect ladder for a physically fit character with infinite time.
