While I like a lot of weapons and use a sword primarily in DnD, my favorites are the halberd and the the war pick/hammer. The halberd gives you range, a pointy thing and two different types of “can opener”. The pick/hammer lets you punch holes in everything and beat anything to death with the same weapon, sweet. (It’s also my geologists pick/hammer in disguise 😳😁)
Scimitars I like for the elegance, and their capability of being wielded in both hands.
The Flail has appeal to me for a one-handed Strength weapon…lots of ways to describe it in combat (a shame it lacks the reach option). It’s also a nice way to flavor a grapple build, if you choose to use the chain of the flail to snare a target.
Rapiers, despite their popularity as the “best” one handed finesse weapon, are still pretty neat. Poke poke poke.
Dual hatchets are pretty neat for both melee & thrown builds…in particular, a nice pairing with an Artificer’s “Returning Weapon” infusion.
whatever suits the character. I have one character with a maul, and another with a rapier, and neither of them would suit the other's weapon!
Personal favourites outside dnd are the sprung trident dagger (I loved cutthroat island as a kid) and the saracen sord of Azim in robin hood; prince of thieves.
I personally like the greataxe. “Rarg! I am big and strong and I will slash at you and do lots of damage!” It’s not as standard or normal as the greatsword; it deals the same amount of damage with fun flavor.
I also like the rapier for its power mechanically- finesse and a d8, but I must admit that my mental image when I use one is probably more like a scimitar.
Hi, I'm basic. I love the Greatsword. Whenever I get off my fantasy-high, I go lance or glave.
Lance, because it's a big spear... and spear is king. Or else glave because it's a sword on a stick, and swords are awesome. Or more specifically, when you have polearm master, sword on a stick is my go to.
There's a dwarf character I really want to play who has a maul and a light hammer. The maul itself is actually a spike anvil on a stick, and the light hammer is his smithing hammer.
The one I loved but isn't in 5e is the Spiked Chain. Used one extensively in a 3.5 Eberron campaign, and really wish there was a standard rule for them. Some of the homebrew attempts are wildly overpowered.
Same, the imagery of using a spiked chain, meteor hammer, or a rope dart always appealed to me. Elegant but very deadly. As for things actually in 5e, I've been fond of the simple yet trusty spear. Honestly, they're historically very effective

Good ones. Or the kursurigama or the urumi whip sword, from India...
Spears are under appreciated. I'd be willing to allow 1d8 one handed, and 1d10 two handed just to see more of them, without having silliness like a single player with a pike (which is off in terms of reach, but this isn't simulation.)

I agree. The Spear was the king of the battlefield. I like the idea of giving the spear the potential for a bit of extra damage.
Glaives are a personal favorite weapon of mine (DM gave my first d&d character a homebrewed one because he knew how much I loved them and I about lost my mind), but for characters I tend to go with what I think suits them best. I just started with a character who uses metal fans with sharpened edges and it's been a blast describing (or just imagining) how that looks in battle.
I like rapiers for the sake of flavor. I’ve always been a sucker for the Three Musketeers-esque bodyguard/advisor trope. Besides, Inigo Montoya. That name constitutes a valid defense for rapiers by itself

I prefer Glaives which are basically spears just u don’t throw them.

Long sword. Nothing says sword and sorcery better.

The Urumi whip sword is a new one to me! What would be a good 5e stand in for it do you think? I'm thinking the Flail might be a good swap.
I like Rapiers a lot, they convey a sort of elegance and razzmatazz that weapons like a flail or dagger don’t.
There a lot of variations on the Urumi, which some include reach. So a flail with a damage type swap might work.
What we really need is a way to create base weapons, but I'm sure that gets messy based on current implementation.
I agree. The Spear was the king of the battlefield. I like the idea of giving the spear the potential for a bit of extra damage.
I like the maul for its overall power but sometimes I prefer the longsword

Depends on who I'm playing as, but it's either a glaive or a sword.
