I want to make a Halloween dnd one shot for my friends themed around the demon Lord Zuggtmoy. I’m not planning on her fighting the characters, but would like the battle to be mostly against her thralls and preventing her from reaching the material plane. I was thinking
I was wondering if there should be special opponents that could be infected that would be interesting or creepy thralls, and if there’s any other demons or powerful creatures who potentially align with her and would assist her in this.
You could also look into Moander; former God of Rot, Decay and Corruption. Both Moander and Zuggtmoy share the same sort of world view and domains of powers. Link to Moanders Wiki here: https://realmofadventure.fandom.com/wiki/Moander.
Back to the one shot though....One servant of Zuggtmoy is a chef who just so happens to be catering a "Harvesttide Festival" the PC's are attending. There are lots of special dishes all involving mushrooms and "secret herbs and spices", at some point other party goers start to act strangely suffering hallications and then transform into various plant based creatures such as Blights and Myconids, at some point the PC's find a portal to the Abyss guarded by an Alkilith through which the Chef hopes to draw enough power for Zuggtmoy's influence to expand on the material plane, the more power he siphons off the more drastic the changes to the local area such as area's of spike growth or plant growth (as per the spells), tree's becoming corrupted Treants and uprooting themselves to venture into the woods etc.
The one shot ends whent he portal is sealed but then gives you a nice little lead off into a campaign or further one shots if you want to expand on it and have the PC's try to reverse the effects the portal had.

That’s really helpful with the article and the idea! I was thinking that I might even have one of the PCs secretly be a servant of Zuggtmoy in the end for a final battle. I also forgot the spoiling even existed and it’s perfect for this!
Zuggtmoy the Demon Queen of Fungi. Can I suggest watching the TV series "The Last of Us" or playing the video game?
Realize she isn't the true embodiment of Fungi and the circle of life. This was an evil demon that gained power and delight from rot and decay. Her followers talk about the circle of life and how you are playing your part by converting your flesh into nourishment of the brood. But don't let that fool you! These are fools who do not understand their own god! If you wanted to add an element of slime and body horror, you could embellish a little with Juiblex "The Faceless Lord".
In my mind, I like to add in elements of motivation. Knowing the motivation of the god, and how literally none of her followers understand her true nature really fleshes out the story. I absolutely love Rob's Chef idea, and then to add to it, he is another misguided follower wanting to keep the circle of life flowing, not realizing he is unleashing the apocalypses. Maybe an idea for a cure or a way to stop it, you could incorporate Faye magic involving some sort of Red Cap Mushroom. Or maybe a device that would summon a group of Madcaps that would clean up the mess, even though those are evil little buggers! But it is your story after all!

I am not sure what my Spirit Animal is. But whatever that thing is, I am pretty sure it has rabies!

In Volos guide to monsters there are monster stat blocks for some of her creatures.
